I do not recommend this book.
By K. Reed
I should have read other reviews more closely. I bought this for my first birding trip to Texas. I expected that this would have ALL Texas birds in it. No, it's missing plenty. For anybody with birding experience the fact that the birds are grouped solely by color is not helpful either. Examples: A brown hawk is next to a brown sparrow. A male Eastern Towhee is in the black and white section while the female is in the brown section. I won't even bother taking this book with me.

I love this book
By Dave Norris
Some people complain that having separate entries for males and females (when their coloration differs) make the book to big. I disagree. How would know that the female painted bunting is all green? Birds don't wear bumper stickers saying "I'm all green but, boy, you should look at my mate!" I love the color coded look up of birds. Looking through my big directories, trying to figure out whether I'm looking at a starling, a chickadee or a sparrow gets old really fast. I'm new at this. I don't know the difference between a starling and a chickadee but I can see the difference between a gray bird and a yellow bird. I love this book.

For Beginners
By Tom
If you have any of Stan's guides, and then buy another one, you learn really quickly that they are all very very similar. I have one for California. Then I got one for Texas. BUT… he really only shows the most common birds, which is a drawback to anyone past their first year of serious birding. I'd say that 80% of the birds in the California Guide were in the Texas guide. So I didn't really gain anything worth buying. It had the same birds, but none of the exciting ones I was actually going to Texas to find… the NEW birds that can't be found in California. So I am stuck with a guide full of Bluebirds, pelicans, and ducks that I already have in my CA book.
If you own "Birds of Southeastern Arizona" by Richard Cachor Taylor, you'll see that his guide is similar too, but he adds a cool feature that shows you where you will likely FIND those birds (he actually names the places… not just giving the habitat). So Taylor's guide offers more. I wish Stan would add that feature. Taylor has taken the small guide to the next level.
Bottom line, if you own one, you probably own enough, unless you put enough geographic territory between the two guidebooks (California and Florida for example). Bird on.
