Try These Exercises If You Dare!

This man knows film and he understands that every produced film could have been made better. His desire is to teach you what to look for when you only have the raw spec script in your hand because that is the time to make it better, see it clearer, hear lasting dialogue and perfect the ending.

Great primer for anyone loving the film industry.

Worth the money on so many levels!

I am fortunate times three
I have read the book, "I Could've Written a Better Movie Than That" and I have met the man who wrote it, and I have had the pleasure and benefit of his instruction.
Derek Rydall is, first of all, incredibly experienced and educated in script analysis, and is able to teach and verbally share those experiences as well as he does in his book.
At first, I was most interested in learning why movies turn out well, and what factors contribute to the ones that are not so good. At the outset, he told me that I would also become a better writer by figuring these things out and learning to be a script consultant.
I have been impressed by the number of times I have referred to the book, even after having read it a number of times.
His advice is plain, simple, wise and real. His character and honesty come through clearly in the way he teaches and in how he writes. It is evident that he believes he is talking to people who have the same attributes, and therefore it inspires you to be honest and real with your own clients.
As a by-product, I have also completed a really decent screenplay--my first after many attempts--of which I am very proud.
There's much to learn in this book as a writer, but for goodness' sake, don't become a consultant without it!

How You Look at It is the catalog of a major photographic exhibition organized by the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, Germany. Its thesis--that photography is the defining art of the 20th century--is straightforward, but its organization is unusual. Rather than a chronological survey of iconic images, the book presents only 40 photographers, from the pioneering Frenchman Atget to postwar Americans and modern German masters like Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky. This enables the chosen artists to be shown in depth, though the criteria for their being chosen are not clear to this reviewer. Exposure to European material will benefit the American audience to whom this English-language edition of the book is directed, but it is unfortunate that, apart from Tomatsu Shomei, no non-Western photographer is included. Just as it took Robert Frank, a Swiss, to shock the art establishment in 1959 with the raw images of his collection The Americans, Americans today can learn from the formal explorations of their transatlantic counterparts. Examples of non-photographic artworks are sprinkled through the book--a Picasso portrait, for example, or a David Hockney cityscape--giving context to the photographs. The thoughtful text consists of essays by the two curators of the show and three other critics who analyze the current theoretical underpinnings of photography. This is not easy reading; the translations successfully preserve the denseness of the original German. This book accompanies a 2000 exhibit of the same name, jointly sponsored by the Sprengel Museum Hannover and the St delsches Kunstinstitute and St dische Galerie, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The editors have put together a large group of pictures to support their assertion that photography is the definitive art form of the 20th century, one that has had a profound effect on the way we see the world, the process by which artists create images, and the course of world events. This is not a survey of 20th-century photography, so many of which were published last year. Rather, by carefully sequencing and juxtaposing photographs and other works of art (paintings, sculpture), the editors establish a kind of dialog that reveals common messages by two or more artists. These groupings work most of the time, though sometimes the nonphotographic comparisons are puzzling at best. The essays are academic in the worst sense but may have suffered from bad translations. One of the most valuable parts of the book is the end matter, which provides biographies, exhibitions, bibliographies of artists in the book, along with full information on each work reproduced (or exhibited). How you look at it isn't always how you see it at first

The book's sub-deck makes rather a bold claim: Photographs of the twentieth century. I think it comes off because the 404 photos (104 in color) take a different perspective from the usual historical survey. Here the thirty-seven photographers are grouped according to theme chapters and each also includes an artist. Why Charles Sheeler, Franz Kline, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Karl Blossfeldt, Odilon and Ellsworth Kelly are all included in one theme is not immediately obvious but this is why the book is so thought provoking.

I'm not entirely convinced, though that the artist additions were really needed. The medium of photography, least looking through the photos here, is wide ranging enough without the added extra of painting and sculpture Thomas Weski, one of the book's editors makes an interesting point in his essay: 'Because pictures like those of Walker Evans do not function as attractive in the first instance, but require viewers to work at understanding them, they reverberate longer and effect enduring changes in our perception of the world'. The five essays (over the first 111pages) are the predictable mixed bag. I thought those by Weski and Gerry Badger the most informative. One by Peter Waterhouse: 'The roads' seemed rather out of place, more a stream-of-consciousness meander about personal transport with the first paragraph stretching over almost four pages.

It's the photos that count of course and I thought the selection particularly impressive. The photographers are well known, mostly American but several Germans as well because the book was based on an exhibition in Germany during 2000. Excellent production using a 200 screen on matt art paper. The back pages have biographies and an exhibition listing.

I've always thought this was an unusual book because of its fresh visual approach to photography.

This book is focused. The best part about it is that it features photographers who are lesser known. The collection of photagraphs have a genuine fresh and modern appeal making this a coffe table book that you will more than once peruse. It is a gem, a truly splendid thing to own.

This was a great buy mainly because it is difficult to find information that is complete while being concise as well. This book has simple graphics and breaks down each metabolic pathway in a sectional way in addition to presenting the whole pathway as a summary.

MIRISSA IN THE NEW LIGHT

I think I forgot to mention in the review of the first book that I did not really like Mirissa's personality. She did not reach me that well for me to enjoy her. I do not fully buy her love team with Greco. It's like there's not enough depth for real love to actually form. Who knows, maybe the novella 'Greco' is all I need. Haven't read it anyway.

But oh well... Mirissa, I'm starting to like you now. Just do not engage too much on flirty acts with Greco.

EASY READ!

Andrea's way of writing is borderline professional--thus making it easy to read. I made a friend of mine read a few chapters and she too told me that it is easy to read and understand. My friend likes reading books she could understand without having to figuratively memorize all the Dictionary's words and its meaning. Her writing is smooth and I did not even felt confused nor lost in any moment of any part or any scene. This book is so much better than its precedent. I couldn't believe there's only 1 star difference between them. Makes me rethink of the 1st book's rating.

ROMEO AND JULIET IN SUPERNATURAL WORLD

This installment focuses a little bit more on Carter's past life and its connection on his team's mission. We saw Romeo in Carter and Juliet in Gina. Two individuals from feuding tribes that were separated by ill intentions. Their story carries a very fresh yet tragic flavor that is so fascinating to read. Though, that's not really the focus here!! But I still like reading their story. They should have their own book!

CARTER, HAN, BEN, LOU

Ha! I was totally giggling when these guys are on the scene. I love their humour. I totally love it. Han and Kell are a comical couple. I love seeing them hanging around. Give the comical couple more comical exposure please! It would be fun, too if Ben and Lou will stick around Carter's team and tease Carter around. I'd love to see how Carter will develop his relationship with the two boys given the fact that he harbors hate and love for the brothers respectively.

FULL OF ACTION

It is full of action to the point where dullness could not penetrate anymore. Each one of the chapters are all engaging. Amazing.

The author is significantly making a development and I must say this is her best work so far! Hope the excitement level never fades. I seriously do not want to be disappointed when I read the next series. Yes, I will read it.

Much better than the first book for me!

This book was a lot of fun! It didn’t change my life or took me to places I’ve never been before, but it was absolutely entertaining. In truth, I was a little fearful of reading this book, because I didn’t enjoy Crossfire (Mirissa as a character especially) as much as I would’ve liked. But I’m very glad I picked this up!
This second book in the series revolves around Carter Mockta, one of the oldest members of the Omega Group, who is a wolf shape-shifter with a Native American background. And he is a great character! Multidimensional and flawed, yet still a true hero. In this mission he has to go back to his home village, a Native American Reservation in the Grand Canyon. And, although I’m no expert, you can tell everything in this book was amazingly well researched (the author actually talks about it after the book ends, and it’s so interesting!).
The book had a great mixture of paranormal and scientific elements, as well as adventure and personal mysteries and developments. There is a great ensemble of heroic characters – paranormal and just plain (awesome) normal -, and I really enjoyed getting to know all of them. I especially LOVED Han! He is funny and witty, and I enjoyed every scene he took part. This wasn’t a one-person-show kind of book, and that was the best part of the book for me, along with the Native American lore. Mirissa did have a part in the adventures, but she didn’t do all the saving, which was wonderfully refreshing. There are some great plot twists – which I saw coming, but didn’t mind because the story was very well written.
Yes, it is still very “super-hero” in the sense that nothing too bad ever really happens, but it is done in a much deeper way than it was in Crossfire. Over all, this book really surprised me in a great way! I also think it might work as a stand-alone, FYI.

Will I read the next one in the series? Sure, if they are anything like this one.
Do I recommend it? Yes, to fans of Urban Supernatural/Fantasy adventures. They aren’t particularly mature books, so people 12 years old and up would enjoy it (for parents out there: there are issues with anger and abortion, but they are all handled very tastefully, I think).

Immerse yourself into a fascinating world

I didn't know what to expect when I started reading Rogue by Andrea Domansky and I was pleasantly surprised! I was given a free copy of this book in return for an honest review. It's a well written, easy to read book full of action. I enjoyed reading it and the author has an elegant writing style without any pompous words. I really liked how the native American tribes are depicted in this story. The prologue is a great introduction chapter in the history of the two main tribes: Havasupia and Yavapai. The plot is complex and interesting. I found myself not being able to put the book down, always curious to see what happens next.
Carter is a great and strong character, similarly like the others from the Omega Group. They all have their own powers and strengths and together they make the perfect team able to tackle anything.
Carter is really not looking forward to coming back home for this mission, he knows many problems will emerge and he will have to deal with them. I like how the author digs into the past bit by bit offering more insight into Carter's life.
This story has it all: action, love, secret missions, government agencies, tribes and wolf and bear shifters; a great mix designed to make you lose yourself in this fascinating world.
It reminded me of the TV series Lost girl. I think the book can be successfully transformed into a movie or even series.
If you want to immerse yourself into a fascinating world and empathize with strong and likeable characters I highly recommend this book!

In depicting her own classroom struggles, Nancie Atwell shook our orthodox assumptions about skill-and-drill-based curriculums and became a pioneer of responsive teaching. Now, in the long awaited second edition, Atwell reflects on the next ten years of her experience, rethinks and clarifies old methods, and demonstrates new, more effective approaches.

The second edition still urges educators to "come out from behind their own big desks" to turn classrooms into workshops where students and teachers create curriculums together. But it also advocates a more activist role for teachers. Atwell writes, "I'm no longer willing to withhold suggestions and directions from my kids when I can help them solve a problem, do something they've never done before, produce stunning writing, and ultimately become more independent of me."

More than 70 percent of the material is new, with six brand-new chapters on genres, evaluation, and the teacher as writer. There are also lists of several hundred minilessons, and scripts and examples for teaching them; new expectations and rules for writing and reading workshops; ideas for teaching conventions; new systems for record keeping; lists of essential books for students and teachers; and forms for keeping track of individual spelling, skills, proofreading, homework, writing, and reading.

Not just for middle school!

This year, for the first time, I am using many of Atwell's ideas in my English classroom, and it is working a hundred times better than I had ever dreamed! Most specifically, I have patterned my writing instruction for my students, grades 6-10, after her writing workshop. Kids who hated writing before now cheer when they know it's a Wednesday or Friday--our writing days. My students are writing more than they ever did, and they enjoy it. I also love it, because their writing is suddenly interesting and full of life.
Although this book makes a terrific handbook, be prepared to make some changes for your own classroom. As Atwell says, these are the methods that work for her in her specific situation. I have made up other forms and other guidelines that fit my school's curriculum and makeup. For example, I do the workshop two days per week. I also have specific types of writing required for the student portfolios, then they may work within those limits. I found this helpful so my students would try a variety of writing, and also fit the district curriculum requirements. Still, the premise, in both theory and practice, is extremely helpful and inspiring. Read the book, then adapt it to your own class.
As for the reading section, I do some reading workshop, but it is not quite as successful. The weekly literary letters are quite cumbersome, for example. The theory is still interesting, and may work better for other classes.

Fantastic teaching strategies given by Nancie Atwell

I very much enjoyed Nancie Atwell's book. Nancy's style of writing allows for easy reading. She presents many useful strategies for teaching reading and writing at the middle school and high school levels (the use of journals to discuss literature). Nancie joins the aspects of reading and writing in the English program to create an almost no-fail system to teaching literature. Great emphasis is placed on the idea that the more students are exposed to reading, writing, and literature, the more appreciative of literature they will become. Students will gain a sort of respect for literature if they are exposed to a steady, constant stream of reading.
One aspect I really did enjoy in Nancy's book were her anecdotes and stories of her own experiences about learning and becoming a teacher. These stories gave a "real flavor" to the book. Nancy's book wasn't about presenting teachers with boring, mechanical information on how to teach reading and writing. Her book presented real strategies for real teachers and real students.

Nancie Atwell Introduces the Reading and Writing Workshop

Atwell introduces her teaching experiences with chapters about how teach writing and reading to the fragile adolescent age groups. In the following chapters she describes, in detail, her procedure of the "writing and reading workshop" for teaching in her classroom. She goes into great detail about how she prepares herself before the students ever come to class, what she does in the first week of school and how she introduces the workshop technique to her students, her use of minilessons, how she responds to students' writing and how she values and evaluates the students' writing. This book is very thorough in its descriptions of how to teach the workshop style of reading and writing. Atwell walks the reader through every step to make this technique successful. She gives many examples of dialogue she, as a teacher, has had with students showing the reader how she handled particular situations that had come up. It leaves no question unanswered. I believe this book is very helpful to teachers who wish to teach this method. Atwell captures her audience by using real stories and references to experts in this field who have studied this technique for years. Although this is a very involved technique and some beginners may feel overwhelmed by the detail, I highly recommend it.
