Good starting point

Bought this in store but wanted to post a review for anyone looking to get their S+. First of all I hold an S+ from 2006 and just passed the 401/current test. This book is a good starting place but in no way is a complete source. There are several inconsistencies in it and the included test questions. Whether it's Comptia Certmaster, a class, or other books I highly recommend using varying sources to round it out. This book in my opinion is more of a primer. I spent roughly 30hrs with the book and it does have alot of information in it. But I would not expect however that someone new to the field using only this book would actually be able to pass the S+ exam however.

Passed the Test!

So I was looking through my past orders, and I guess I bought this at Barnes and Nobles...but wanted to post my review anyways.

I have to give this book 5 Stars because I passed the test. I didn't at all feel comfortable with the score (783...when 750 is the minimum needed to pass), but I'll tell you my study habits, and you can take it for what it's worth.

This is the only book that I studied. I studied about one chapter per day (so about 20 days to complete the whole book). After I completed the whole book, I took about another 2 days to go back through the entire book studying just the questions at the end and the two-minute reviews. I also crammed with the practice questions that come on the disk, until 1:00AM the day of the test; I went through the practice test twice (scored poorly the first go-around, and passed the second time). I don't have any experience in the industry, so this was pretty much a crash course.

I definitely don't recommend taking less than 25 days to prepare if you don't have any experience, but it is possible. If I could go back and do it again, I would have spend at least 3 days on each chapter. I would also have gone through the practice tests more, and possibly tried other online practice tests.

I don't want to "sell" this book as the only one you will ever need...but if you're wondering if it's possible to pass the course with this book, given a tight schedule...yes, it is possible!

In Chapter 1 where mentions the TCP 3 Way Handshake is wrong. Please see below.

SYN In the first phase, the sending system sends a SYN message to the receiving system. Each packet sent is assigned a sequence number, which is a unique number assigned to the packet. The SYN message contains the initial sequence number (ISN), which is the first sequence number to be used. In this example, Computer A is connecting to the web site on Computer B, so a SYN message is sent to port 80 on Computer B.

ACK/SYN The second phase is known as the ACK/SYN phase because this message is acknowledging the first message but at the same time is indicating its initial sequence number. In this example, Computer B sends back the ACK/SYN message that is acknowledging that it has received packet 123 (by acknowledging that 124 is the next sequence number), but has also specified that its ISN is 326.

ACK The final phase of the three-way handshake is the acknowledgment message, which acknowledges that the packet sent in the second phase has been received. In this example, Computer A sends the ACK to acknowledge that it has received packet 326 by acknowledging that the next packet will be sequence number 327.

Great little book packed with information

I am extremely satisfied. This book has been very helpful to me. After struggling with lots of manuals that focused on design or mechanics and were overly technical, it has been a blessing to find something that you can actually put to use and is has been written for the layman. I particularly loved the graphs on fuel expenditures vs. load and the installation guidelines to avoid sabotaging your own generator into low performance, as I have done with mine.

Although it mentions such projects, I find the "in development projects" in the title may be misleading. The vast majority of the text applies to any generator. "For owners" may have been better.

I enjoyed this book and found it very informative. Anyone who is in need of information about generator sizing, efficiency and set-up in a rural environment should check this book out. It is a quick read and suited to anyone looking for clear information about operating a generator. It does not however give much detail as to engine selection or building a generator for custom applications although some of the basics are there.
