"In this book Joscha Bach introduces Dietrich D�rner's PSI architecture and Joscha's implementation of the MicroPSI architecture. These architectures and their implementation have several lessons for other architectures and models. Most notably, the PSI architecture includes drives and thus directly addresses questions of emotional behavior. An architecture including drives helps clarify how emotions could arise. It also changes the way that the architecture works on a fundamental level, providing an architecture more suited for behaving autonomously in a simulated world. PSI includes three types of drives, physiological (e.g., hunger), social (i.e., affiliation needs), and cognitive (i.e., reduction of uncertainty and expression of competency). These drives routinely influence goal formation and knowledge selection and application. The resulting architecture generates new kinds of behaviors, including context dependent memories, socially motivated behavior, and internally motivated task switching. This architecture illustrates how emotions and physical drives can be included in an embodied cognitive architecture.

The PSI architecture, while including perceptual, motor, learning, and cognitive processing components, also includes several novel knowledge representations: temporal structures, spatial memories, and several new information processing mechanisms and behaviors, including progress through types of knowledge sources when problem solving (the Rasmussen ladder), and knowledge-based hierarchical active vision. These mechanisms and representations suggest ways for making other architectures more realistic, more accurate, and easier to use.

The architecture is demonstrated in the Island simulated environment. While it may look like a simple game, it was carefully designed to allow multiple tasks to be pursued and provides ways to satisfy the multiple drives. It would be useful in its own right for developing other architectures interested in multi-tasking, long-term learning, social interaction, embodied architectures, and related aspects of behavior that arise in a complex but tractable real-time environment.

The resulting models are not presented as validated cognitive models, but as theoretical explorations in the space of architectures for generating behavior. The sweep of the architecture can thus be larger-it presents a new cognitive architecture attempting to provide a unified theory of cognition. It attempts to cover perhaps the largest number of phenomena to date. This is not a typical cognitive modeling work, but one that I believe that we can learn much from."

Although computational models of cognition have become very popular, these models are relatively limited in their coverage of cognition-- they usually only emphasize problem solving and reasoning, or treat perception and motivation as isolated modules. The first architecture to cover cognition more broadly is PSI theory, developed by Dietrich Dorner. By integrating motivation and emotion with perception and reasoning, and including grounded neuro-symbolic representations, PSI contributes significantly to an integrated understanding of the mind. It provides a conceptual framework that highlights the relationships between perception and memory, language and mental representation, reasoning and motivation, emotion and cognition, autonomy and social behavior. It is, however, unfortunate that PSI's origin in psychology, its methodology, and its lack of documentation have limited its impact. The proposed book adapts Psi theory to cognitive science and artificial intelligence, by elucidating both its theoretical and technical frameworks, and clarifying its contribution to how we have come to understand cognition.

About the Author
Joscha Bach graduated in Computer Science and Philosophy at Humboldt University of Berlin, and received a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science at the University of Osnabruck. His research activities in the field of Artificial Intelligence included computational modeling of social interaction, affective computing, mental representation, and robotic soccer. Between 2002 and 2007, he directed the development of the cognitive architecture MicroPsi. Currently, he is developing AI methods for the organization of textual data at a startup company in Berlin, Germany.

His basic concepts are similar to the ones of Gerald Edelman's "Theory of Neuronal Group Selection", except that -as far as I understand it- Bach
(1) does not introduce neural Darwinism as the model for how the brain selects among entries in our memory (Edelman bases this tenet on the analogy between brain and immune system).
(2) seems not to allow fuzziness (Edelman calls it "degeneracy") of memory entries.

This book is an essential item for any scientist hoping to work in the tropics. These papers provide a foundation (as the name states) for understanding both how the tropical forest biome functions as well as the process by which we came to gain some understanding of these processes. The value of this book is obvious to biologists, but I think it can also offer a lot of insight for anthropologists and archaeologists since culture and ecosystem are so closely tied. Finally, it offers us a chance to see the development of ideas about tropical biology and an understanding of where we are now in our grasp of what can be argued is the most important and imperiled of the world's ecosystems.

"Highly" recommend this book

Halfway through and I must admit: This is not for the feint of heart.

If you want to know the details of medical marijuana, coupled with a nice history, this book is for you. There's short questions after each chapter, as if the book was intended to teach a class.

This covers in good detail each state, president, impact, law, et cetera. Keep in mind as MMJ laws change parts of this book may not be accurate. For example, Illinois has an MMJ law that isn't mentioned in the book. That does not diminish the book's accuracy in the least, rather, it adds historical value to the reading material and the reader is able to see how laws have changed over time.

This book highlights the contradictory laws and the huge "grey" area of who can have marijuana and can't.

There's more than a history lesson in this book as well. It's well worth a read if you're researching MMJ or just interested in the subject and need a starting point.

About the Author
Dr Wei Shyy is the Provost of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and formerly Clarence L. 'Kelly' Johnson Collegiate Professor and Department Chair of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan. Shyy is the author or a co-author of four books and numerous journal and conference articles dealing with a broad range of topics related to aerial and space flight vehicles. He is General Editor of the Cambridge Aerospace Book Series (Cambridge University Press) and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the nine-volume Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering (2010). He has received the 2003 AIAA Pendray Aerospace Literature Award and the ASME 2005 Heat Transfer Memorial Award. He has led multi-university centers under the sponsorship of NASA, the US Air Force Research Laboratory and industry. His professional views have been quoted in various news media, including the New York Times and USA Today.

The technical data is invaluable and the author condensed a vast technical material nicely in several chapters. If you are an aerospace scientist and doing daily engineering analysis this book is tailored to help you refresh your spacecraft dynamic and control methodology knowledge. Fairly easy to read and apply.

A great, practical text--M. J. Sidi has wisdom for both new engineers and seasoned professionals

Surprised Sidi's great text has no 5 star reviews yet. I discovered this book while I was working on a smallsat ADCS--my first assignment as a controls engineer where I carried any real responsibility. I had done my undergrad in physics and was still learning how to think like an engineer. Thanks to Sidi's practical and thorough discussion of attitude dynamics and control I was able to successfully complete this first assignment. Indeed, so much so that at the end of it my boss, who knew my background, met with me and asked "how the heck do you know so much about spacecraft dynamics?!". When I became a grad student I was the project manager for a smallsat attempt by Purdue, and also did specific research on ADCS which became my master's thesis and has produced peer-reviewed publications. Throughout all of that I kept a copy of Sidi on my desk and consulted it frequently. Everyone can learn something from this book, and I am sad I no longer have a copy--I will have to remedy that soon .

Practical coverage, few examples

This is a preliminary review as I am still going through the book. I had a few books I looked at from the library, but I picked this one since it seemed to move well between the theory and what situations are typical. The deficiency though, is that there are only a few worked examples mixed in with the chapter.

Great Resource

Just a really great, practical resource for therapists and counselors supporting people through the divorce process, from A to Z. The author covers pretty much everything. The book outlines the stages of divorce with 74 exercises that can be copied and handed to clients to finish between sessions. A tool like this is invaluable especially when clients are overwhelmed by their circumstances and need help getting organized. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that my copy came with a floppy disk which is unusable in 2014 - book was published in 2002 and my copy is used.

I bought three homework planners, which I intented to use is my practice and facilitate my work as a counsellor. The software in these planners is 10 years old
and there are no computer around to take a floppy disk or a disk with such old technology, therefore I can't use the material as I should. Very dissapointed.
I had been very satisfied with my purchases from Amazon up to know.
I will have to rethink what I buy from you. It would have been very useful to know the books included
software so anticuated and now usless in most computers, that way I could have decided wether or not to buy them.
