About the Author
A chemist by training, Gerhard Gottschalk received his PhD in microbiology in 1963 from the University of G?ttingen, Germany, before becoming a post-doc at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1970 he was made a full professor for microbiology in G?ttingen, where he also served as president between 1975 and 1976. He was a visiting professor in UC Davis in 1973 and UC Berkeley in 1979, and head of the Laboratory for Genome Analysis
at the Institute of Microbiology and Genetics in G?ttingen from 1999 to 2007. He has received numerous awards, including the Philip Morris Prize for cutting-edge technology, the Winogradsky Medal, the Emil von Behring Prize and the first class German National Medal of Honor. Professor Gottschalk is a member of the G?ttingen Academy of Sciences, the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, an honorary member of the
Israeli Society of Microbiology, and a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. He was president of All European Academies (ALLEA) from 1998 to 2000 and president of the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities from 2003 to 2007.

Excellent text. The content is similar to other general microbiology texts but presented in a unique and more engaging manner. The body of the text is presented as a conversation where a microbiologist responds to questions from an intelligent non-scientist. The explanations are clear and include quotes from leading microbiologists. More detailed information is included in a second section. As a bonus, it costs less than half what other intro texts go for.

Too little information -- too much information

I was a little disappointed by this book, but that could be because I was expecting something else. I was hoping for a general overview over micobes, but this book went too deep many times so that I lost interest. I felt like in biology class back in school. Way too much information unless you really, really want to study this subject. I skipped parts of some chapters because I really didn't care for the chemical intricacies for certain cell processes.

On the other hand the book doesn't go too much into different classes of bacteria and viruses. So at times I wanted to have more information.

While a lot of the chapters are very interesing, they didn't connect at all. Some chapters talk about evolution, some chapters about a brief history of antibiotics, and so on.

Anyway, I'm looking for a better book about learning more about microbes.

On July 25, 2010, Eileen Bjorkman's 82-year-old father, Arnold Ebneter, took off from Paine Field in Everett, Washington, to set an aviation world record in an airplane he designed himself and built in his garage in Woodinville, Washington. The 2,300-mile non-stop flight took the retired Air Force pilot and Boeing engineer eighteen hours, but the preparation took fifty years. A curiosity and aviation sideshow at one time, homebuilt aircraft now make up about one in five small, privately-owned aircraft in the United States. With contributions that include fabric covering systems, sturdy landing gears, and affordable avionics, homebuilt aircraft are a small but ever-growing part of aviation's DNA.Bjorkman uses her background as a pilot, would-be homebuilder, and aeronautical engineer to intertwine the century-long history and culture of homebuilt aircraft in the United States with Ebneter's fifty-year struggle to build his airplane. Along the way lay tales of derring-do pioneers and their fragile craft that could barely become airborne to visionaries that kept homebuilding freedoms alive in the 1940s and modern homebuilts that rival and even surpass the performance and quality of factory-built aircraft.In addition to the narrative, the book provides a non-technical window into the world of aircraft design and construction: What's involved in designing an airplane? About the Author
Senior Electrical Engineer who has worked for the past twenty years in the field of embedded control systems. He previously worked on Global Positioning Systems and secure communications equipment at Rockwell International, on document processing equipment at Banctec, and on medical electronics at Organon-Teknika. He has written several books and many articles for periodicals such as Circuit Cellar INK, and Modern Electronics.

Ed Ramsden is an electrical engineer who has been working with Hall effect sensors since 1988. His experience ranges from designing Hall effect integrated circuits to developing novel magnetic processing techniques. He has written over a dozen technical articles on sensor-related topics, and he holds four U.S patents in the area of magnetic sensor technology.

Prof Dogan Ibrahim graduated from the University of Salford with First Class Honours in Electronic Engineering. He then completed an MSc course in Automatic Control Engineering at the University of Manchester, and PhD in Digital Signal Processing at the City University in London. Prof Ibrahim worked at several companies before returning to the academic life. He is currently a lecturer at the Department of Computer Information Systems at the Near East University. Prof Ibrahim is a Fellow of the IET, and a Chartered Electrical Engineer. His interests are in the fields of microcontroller based automatic control, digital signal processing, and computer aided design.

This book covers the fundamentals of test and measurement including data acquisition, sensors, accelerometers and various computer instrumentation. This would be a perfect resource for beginners but it could serve as a good reference for non-beginners as well. Tons of figures/tables to illustrate points. At times a little wordy. Overall, it's a solid reference/text.

Brenda Shaughnessy was born in Okinawa, Japan and grew up in Southern California. Shaughnessy’s poems have appeared in Best American Poetry, Harper's, The Nation, The Rumpus, The New Yorker, and The Paris Review. She is an Assistant Professor of English at Rutgers University, Newark, and lives in Brooklyn with her husband, son and daughter.

This manual was written specifically based on all the above instructions and related NIST Special Publications with the purpose of providing individuals with the knowledge to understand the DoD RMF process and implement the same for their systems. This manual's author is a certified (ISC)2 Instructor, who has taught CISSP, ISSEP, and CAP certification review courses for over 8 years internationally. Additionally, he has lead or supported over 300 military, civilian and Federal system security assessments over the past 20 years. Using his experience, he has augmented the course with successful strategies and real-world samples of key documents (i.e., Security Plan (SP), Security Assessment Reports (SAR), Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M), Overlays, and Information Security Continuous Monitoring Plans (ISCMP)). These help to ensure this manual supports the all the personnel at the DoD Component levels from the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Authorizing Official (AO) to the Information System Owner (ISO) and User Representative (UR) in understanding the process and their responsibilities in implementing the DoD RMF process. Hassan's account begins in the early twentieth century, as he considers the pioneering Lebanese American writers, Ameen Rihani and Kahlil Gibran. The former's seminal novel, The Book of Khalid sought to fuse Arabic and European literary traditions in search of a civilizational synthesis, whereas the latter found success by mixing Hindu, Christian, mystical, and English Romantic ideas into a popular spiritualism. Hassan then considers Arab immigrant life-writing, ranging from autobiographies by George Haddad and Abraham Rihbany to memoirs of exile by the Egyptian-born Leila Ahmed and Palestinian refugees like Fawaz Turki and Edward Said. Hassan considers issues of representation in looking to how Arab immigrant writers like Ramzi Salti and Rabih Alameddine use homosexuality to reflect on Arab typecasting. Ahdaf Soueif's fiction reflects her growing awareness of the politics of reception of Anglophone Arab women writers while Leila Aboulela's fiction, inspired by an immigrant Islamic perspective, depicts the predicament of the Muslim minority in Britain.

About the Author

Wa�l S. Hassan is Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the author of Tayeb Salih: Ideology and the Craft of Fiction, co-editor of Approaches to Teaching the Works of Naguib Mahfouz, and translator of Abdelfattah Kilito's Thou Shalt Not Speak My Language.
