Rasputin the Mad Monk

The book The Minister of EvilThe Secret History of Rasputin's Betrayal of Russia, is a great read if you enjoy historical fiction. Before reading the book, I was well aware of who Rasputin was and the history behind Russia's Imperial family. I found the book quite accurate in it's historical depiction of the Imperial family, as well as the main character Rasputin. If you enjoy conspiracies based on historical events, then this book is for you. I enjoyed the book from it's very beginning and I could not put it down. The author William Le Queux will keep you enthralled from beginning to the end. Enjoy.

Just Didn't Hold My Attention

This ebook was redundant to the point I couldn't remember if I was rereading something or going foreward and seeing the same thing again. The reduncy was enough to cause me to give up with a hopeless feeling. As an avid reader, I was less than thrilled about this. I suppose the price was appropriate. I would shudder to think of spending money or wasting a monthly Prime loan on this.

I recommend Massie's "Nicholas and Alexandra"

This book pretends to be non-fiction but the author who was supposed to be Rasputin's secretary apparently never met the man. By comparing what the author says with other books that describe Rasputin, one sees quickly that this book is nothing but a "pack of lies". Rasputin was an evil, hard drinking womanizing fraud but he was not a friend of Germany. If you want to know more about Rasputin, I recommend Massie's "Nicholas and Alexandra".

About the Author
Andrew B. Abel is the Ronald A. Rosenfeld Professor of Finance at the Wharton School and professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his AB summa cum laude from Princeton University and holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Abel has published extensively on fiscal policy, capital formation, monetary policy, asset pricing, and social security–as well as serving on the editorial boards of numerous journals. He has been honored as the Alfred P. Sloan Fellow, a Fellow of the Econometric Society, and a recipient of the John Kenneth Galbraith Award for teaching excellence. He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a member of the Advisory Board of the Carnegie-Rochester Conference Series.

Ben S. Bernanke Previously the Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University, Ben Bernanke received both the Allyn Young Prize for best Harvard undergraduate economics thesis and the John H. Williams prize for outstanding senior in the economics department. He went on to earn his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he has been honored as a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Currently, he is Chairman and a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

Dean Croushore is an associate professor of economics and Rigsby Fellow at the University of Richmond. Croushore served for fourteen years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, twelve of which as the head of the macroeconomics section. He has taught previously at Penn State University, Temple University, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins University, and Princeton University.

Ron Kneebone is a professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Calgary. From 2006 to 2009 he served as Director of the Institute for Advanced Policy Research at the University of Calgary. �Since 2009, when the IAPR was absorbed into the School of Public Policy, he has acted as Director of Economic & Social Policy Research in the School.�Dr Kneebone’s research interests lay mainly in the areas of the macroeconomic aspects of public finances and fiscal federalism. His published research has dealt with issues pertaining to government budget financing in a federal state, the political economy of government deficit and debt reduction, the history of government fiscal and monetary relations in Canada and the characteristics of Canadian federal, provincial and municipal fiscal policy choices.

I bought this text for self study. This book is clearly written so that a self-learner can learn intermediate macroeconomics. I particularly like the appendix that follows the chapter on IS-LM. The problems in both the workbook and the textbook allow me to think deeply about the concepts.

The text does not have any answers at the back of the text.

Every morning for the past semester, I have worked my way through this text. I find the text easy reading and enjoyable.

Class was terrible, book was GREAT

The topic is a hard if you are not a math wiz. I honestly had a lot of trouble with Micro economics because of the terrible book, but thought this book was outstanding in explaining the topic. I did well in this class not because the professor was any good, but because this book had great examples, explained everything in great detail and was to the point. Yes, i need the dumbed down version...this is a basics book. I cant stand ordering a basics book, only to have it be completely over my head. This def did its job. I highly recommend it.

Decent, but do not purchase from Amazon.com if you need MyEconLab

Another reviewer mentioned he/she got a version without MyEconLab (which costs $50 extra to purchase separately). I thought he/she just bought it off of someone in the Amazon *marketplace*. Nope, I bought the version "sold by and fulfilled by Amazon" and I also got shafted. The book is supposed to come in shrinkwrap with MyEconLab login sheet attached to it, but mine came without it. If you need the login, your university bookstore may just be the cheapest place to find this thing.

Update: I gave it 2 stars initially for the rip-off. Now, after having read the book, I'd give it 3 to 5 stars for content. My University of Chicago professor did a lot better job explaining the concepts than the book, so maybe my expectations are inflated, but I thought that Abel/Bernanke could have made it more simple and less verbose. Still, if you can stay focused enough to read this thing (I had a hard time and I like the subject matter), it does explain macro much better than some of the alternatives I've seen before. Also, the "real life" application green sections are incredibly valuable, as they contain some empirical data to show which theories are most likely valid; e.g. does lowering personal taxes actually "stimulate the economy" (increase GDP). A lot of macroeconomics is about which theory/assumptions you end up believing, and this book does a decently good and impartial job at pointing you in the "probably right" direction. You will also gain some appreciation for why macroeconomists can disagree so strongly about basic policy issues.

Overall, I'd give this book three stars compared to my grad school professor but five stars comparing to my undergrad professor and textbook. If you are forced to learn macro by just reading this book, you'll get a pretty good basic understanding without too much pain (comparing to the alternatives of course).

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of senile dementia, affecting more than 24 million people worldwide. It is characterised pathologically by abnormally high levels of brain lesions (senile plaques) in dead and dying neurons, and by elevated numbers of amyloid deposits in the walls of cerebral blood vessels. The major component of senile plaques is a small protein of 39 43 amino acids called amyloid- (A ). Thus far, no treatment has been shown to slow the progression of sporadic and familial Alzheimer's disease.

A large body of evidence points to the early A oligomers as the primary toxic species in Alzheimer's disease. A powerful strategy for developing pharmaceutical treatments against Alzheimer's is to elucidate the pathways of oligomer formation and determine the structures of the toxic aggregates.

This book provides a panoramic view across recent in vitro and in vivo studies along with state-of-the-art computer simulations, designed to increase the readers' understanding of A oligomerisation and fibril formation. At the same time, the book delves into the pathogenesis of familial and sporadic Alzheimer's disease at the atomic level of detail.

Essential Reading

This is a great book and the subject matter is well presented. It's very technical and as a clinician rather than an academic I found some areas heavy going, but it's well worth working though it. There's no opinion just simply facts and data, which are extremely well researched. You'd need a fair understanding of the subject to be able to appreciate the information so if your looking for an introduction this is not for you. But if you're interested in the mechanics this is a well balanced read.

About the Author
Elvis C. Foster�is Associate Professor of Computer Science at Keene State College, New Hampshire. He holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science and Electronics, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science (specializing in strategic information systems and database systems) from University of the West Indies, Mona Jamaica. �Dr. Foster has over 25 years of combined experience as a software engineer, database expert, information technology executive and consultant, and computer science educator. He has had the favorable experience of being involved with the design and/or development of software systems for various medium-sized and large organizations, including the central bank of his own country. He has lectured at the tertiary level in three different countries, including the United States, where he now resides. He has produced many outstanding computer science and information technology professionals. Many of them have excelled at graduate school; others have gone straight to industry after their first degree; the thorough grounding acquired often serves them well, whether it be in leading software engineering enterprises around the world, or in other chosen vocations.�His textbooks draw from that experience.

Fundamentally Solid

This book is an excellent resource that delves into both the science and fundamental principles that are the underpinning of database systems, as well as practical hands-on examples of these principles applied in common software paradigms. In doing so the book lives up to its title, while not short-changing the reader on essential information. The reader’s attention is directed to the most salient points of the topic, so that a fundamental understanding is accomplished without being overwhelmed.

The choice to present the various facets of database systems in the context of software engineering rather than as a stand-alone topic was a wise departure from other texts which deal with the topic in-depth but in a vacuum. Both students and practicing engineers will be grateful for the meaningful examples that demonstrate the concept at hand.

The content is presented in the form of conversational chapters, twenty-five in all, grouped into five divisions. As is typical from this author the appendices are nearly as rich in information as the regular text of the book; the reader will get more than they bargained for while reviewing the topics covered there.

Just about every facet of database systems is covered, suiting it very well to be used as both a study guide and a reference manual. Of special note is the section on relational calculus, which is covered particularly well in this book. Along with efficient database design, relational calculus remains one of the most important yet least understood aspects of database systems among practicing professionals.

As with other books from Foster, the content is both experientially relevant and academically rigorous. The result is a fine text that represents a valuable contribution to the field.

I’ve said in the past that one of the best things I ever did was to get a college degree in my chosen field, Computer Science, specifically focusing on database systems. When in college, I didn’t learn “Oracle” or “SQL Server” per se. Rather, I was taught the fundamentals on how database systems work. My first DBA job was working with Oracle. Later on, I was asked to learn SQL Server. The transition was easy for me because I had a solid foundation and a good understanding of database fundamentals. At one point, I was an instructor at a local college and I taught a database course focusing on Oracle administration. This college billed itself as providing graduates that are “business ready”. Students from this institution learned Oracle and Cisco, etc. I soon found out that their students never learned how computer systems really work. So their graduates could help a company that used Oracle but not a company that used SQL Server or DB2. Quite simply, the students had no solid foundation to work from. I’m also amazed at the number of database application developers who don’t know what Third Normal Form is yet they create database tables. It seems like people aren’t learning the fundamentals like they used to.

I mention all of the above as reasons for buying this book. This book is for anyone that needs to understand how database systems work, to learn a solid database foundation, regardless of the database vendor. Yet the book does detail information on Oracle, SQL Server, DB2 and more. If you're an IT professional who works with relational database systems, then get this book to improve your foundation of how relational databases work.

I found Part B of the book to be very refreshing. It was good to brush up on Normal Forms, Relationships defined, surrogate keys, ERD’s and UML. I’ve always felt that Relational Algebra and Relational Calculus should be required for anyone to help understand how and why SQL works and the authors discuss this quite well in Chapters 7 and 8. Part C covers SQL statements, the lingua franca of any relational database professional. Part D covers different database systems: Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, and MySQL. I thought that each chapter was light and could have been expanded further, but they do serve as introductory information. Discussions of the different RDBMS platforms often starts flame wars so maybe that’s why the authors didn’t provide further detail. Appendix B, discussing tree structures, I felt should not have been an appendix. Its material is too important for all Database Administrators. Yet the material is here so please give it a read.

All in all, this is a great book for any relational database professional. This will help provide a solid foundation for career success. Armed with the information in this book, one should be able to work with any RDBMS platform and understand, at a conceptual level, what the database engine is trying to achieve.

About the Author
Michael B. Sponsler earned his PhD from the California Institute of Technology in 1987, working as an NSF Graduate Fellow with Dennis A. Dougherty. He did research as an NIH Post-doctoral Fellow with Robert G. Bergman at the University of California, Berkeley and then accepted a faculty position at Syracuse University in 1989, where he is now Associate Professor. His research involves physical organic studies in the diverse areas of conjugated organometallic complexes and liquid crystalline holographic recording materials. The organometallic studies include synthesis and characterization of both mixed-valence complexes with polyenediyl bridges and related polymers. Applications in molecular electronics and nanotechnology are under investigation. The holographic studies are focused on new strategies for producing electrically switchable holograms.
