About the Author
Romilla Ready is a Master Practitioner of Neuro-linguistic Programming, and is the director of Ready Solutions, which was founded in 1996. She runs professionally developed workshops across a range of areas and has trained clients in the UK and overseas, using her cross-cultural skills to build rapport between different nationalities. Romilla has been interviewed on local radio and has had articles on stress management and applications of NLP published in the press.
Kate Burton is an NLP coach and trainer who enables individuals and organizations to focus their energy effectively. Her business career began in corporate advertising and marketing with Hewlett-Packard. Since then she has worked with many varied businesses across industries and cultures on how they can be great communicators. What she loves most is delivering custom-built training and coaching programmes. She thrives on supporting people in boosting their motivation, self-awareness and confidence. Her belief is that people all have unique talents, abilities and core values. The skill is about honouring them to the full.

Much like a book of "neurosurgery for dummies"

Clearly NOT for "dummies". Still, I shaved off a star because the actual field of NLP is a true specialty and the benefits would be elusive for the novice or the "do it yourself-er". Much like a book of "neurosurgery for dummies", this is a great way to learn the potential and theory behind NLP, but not a system to really use it. Still, with that being said, you get quite a lot of information on NLP here and as with most books in this series, it is well worth the money.

very helpful for making specific life improvement plans

I'd recommend this book as quite helpful to self-motivated people who are interested in refining and actuating their life goals. This book clarified understanding my own communication style, and that of those around me. It was revelatory in understanding how to listen more effectively to colleagues and customers. Most of all, I have found the exercises in "well-formed outcome" to be extremely helpful in setting goals and making plans for the next things I want to do in life - basically which revolve around getting better at the things I do. I have spread out sheets of paper across the floor with categories of various self-improvements, and have worked out "well-formed outcomes" for each. It's been great to learn how much of our hopes and dreams can stay stuck as a fond wish, with little between our desire and the ability to carry out our dreams except for doing more comprehensive planning. This has been the first "For Dummies" book I've bought, as I usually start with more specific texts to learn about something, but it was recommended by a friend who has been going through teacher training in NLP. The title is ironic, as the book is premised on how self-talk affects success - nevertheless, the content is very worthwhile.

NLP is a powerful model of psychology and management, incorporating the subconscious mind, the power in intention, body language, and the spoken word. In this "Dummies" book, you will get a very general overview of NLP - enough to whet the whistle, and a little more.
The concepts behind NLP are firmly rooted in the effects of our senses on the subconsious mind. NLP transforms these from a subconsious effect to a conscious one, where the NLP practitioner can influence their own or others behavior and outcomes by utilizing consciously the senses to drive behaviors.
Discussing concepts such as anchors, swoosh patterns, and the power of the sopken word, Ready and Burton also provide the reader with simple to follow practical exercises, theory and tools to introduce the reader to NLP concepts and strategies.
If you are interested in NLP, this books will give you the basics, and maybe a touch more. For a powerful and effective tool like NLP, however, like any other discipline, the Dummies book will only whet the appetite, not serve as a meal.
