Not up to the standard of other infant mental health texts

There are several texts on the market that cover similar material that are far more comprehensive and well written, for example works by Zeanah and Lieberman. This book is just not in the same league as other scholarly texts on infant mental health.

Though 12th-century mystic Hildegard of Bingen began receiving visions at the extraordinarily young age of five, she was in her early 40s before she revealed them to the public in her writings, artwork and music. Not so for Idaho-born Akiane, a media star who, at the age of 10, confidently reveals her divinely inspired artwork and poetry to the wider world. The book is divided into three parts, the first section being the story of Akiane's life and her visions (which first began at the age of four) as told by her mother—a kind of hagiography of sorts. It's well meaning, but generally stilted and flat in its prose. Most interesting are parts two and three, the second section devoted to full color depictions of Akiane's paintings (vivid, fantasy-like portraits in color and scene), and the third a selection of her poetry. Even more interesting—yet unfortunately left unexplored in any real depth—is the question of how to understand Akiane in the context of Christian spirituality. Is she a mystic? A precociously gifted child? The product of smart agents and advertising? All of the above? Readers will have to decide those questions for themselves. (Apr.)

About the Author
Akiane Kramarik is a ten-year-old internationally renowned artist and poet. She created her first drawing at age four and at the age of eight sold her first painting for $10,000. Akiane speaks four languages and wants to use her God-given talent to raise money to help needy children all over the world. She lives in Idaho with her parents, three brothers, and a big-hearted golden retriever.

An amazing artist!

Akiane Kramarik has captured my coworkers and myself at our bookstore from the first moment we saw her book. The imagery is stunning and quite evocative. She is clearly mystically inclined and is hard to understand at times. Her mother's story of her young life, from birth to eleven years old, is compelling, even if not very professional. She's a mom and not a professional writer after all. The poems are breathtaking and profound, taking several readings to begin to "get" them. Though I suspect that if Akiane has gotten these from God, then they may not be "gotten" until we share her heavenly perspective. It seems that she is a prophet of sorts. We'll have to await what comes to pass in the coming years to see if she is really of God or not. One thing is for certain however, and that is her talent. Whether it's her painting, sketching, or poetry, it's no overstatement to call her a genius. I just hope she can stay humble in such an environment. I look forward to what her future will bring to us!

This is a great thing to see. We are seeing someone who is born with this talent and we get to see her progress with this. I think people get caught up in the "Christian" aspect of it and seem to be negative about her.

What is she? She's an 11 year old who paints what she sees in her mind. Does it matter if it not stylized as people think it should be? Again, when you hear this artist talk, she paints her dreams and what she sees in her mind. I think that's true of a lot of artists.

And for the people who are negative about her, it has drawn their attention too.

Is this artist looking to be taken seriously in the "art world?" It does not seem that way. This artist is painting what she wants to paint and seems to love it.

Children, even those called "prodigies", have something to teach us and we put them off because they're "just kids."

I love this and take it for what it is.

About the Author

John E. Farley is Professor of Sociology at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, where he has taught courses ranging from introductory sociology to a course in advanced data analysis for graduate students. He conducted his undergraduate studies at Michigan State University, where he received a B.A. in political science. He continued his studies at the University of Michigan, where he received an M.A. and a Ph.D. in sociology, as well as the master of urban planning degree. He has taught at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville since 1977.

He is the author of two other Prentice Hall books, Majority-Minority Relations, Fourth Edition (2000) and American Social Problems: An Institutional Analysis, Second Edition (1992). He is an active researcher in urban sociology and race and ethnic relations, and his articles have appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, the American Journal of Economics and Sociology Urban Affairs quarterly, and a number of other journals. He also regularly presents the results of his research at professional meetings, and has addressed such meetings in Canada and Sweden as well as throughout the United States. He has provided expert testimony in a number of federal court cases pertaining to racial discrimination and segregation in housing, and he has served as a member of the editorial board of Urban Affairs quarterly. He headed a research team studying public response to Then Browning's prediction of an earthquake in the Midwest in 1990, and was editor of a special issue of the International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters on that topic. His book, Earthquake Fears, Predictions, and Preparations in Mid-America, which reports the results of the three-year study, was published by Southern Illinois University Press in 1998. Dr. Farley has conducted research on racial housing segregation based on each U.S. census from 1980 through 2000. He has received research grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Mental Health, and SIUE's Graduate School and Institute for Urban Research.

Professor Farley has received a number of awards for his work, including the SIUE Outstanding Scholar Award for his research on race relations and racial housing segregation, the SIUE Kimmell Community Service Award for his efforts in creating a fair housing organization in the St. Louis metropolitan area, and SIUE's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., University Humanitarian Award for his efforts in the community. He has served as president of the SIUE Faculty Senate and the Illinois Sociological Association. In 2000-2001, he was president of the Midwest Sociological Society, one of the largest and most active regional sociological organizations in the United States. In the picture above, he is delivering his presidential address to the Society in 2001. Dr. Farley enjoys fishing, snow skiing, travel, and nature and weather photography, especially when sharing these activities with his wife, Alice, and his daughter, Megan, now 17. In the last edition, he regretted to report one major role reversal: By then, it was Megan who had to wait for him to catch up on the ski slopes. Now, he reports, Megan's wait has become longer.

I have sold my soul to Cam!

I’m intoxicated with this story! There are no words to describe the psychological impact, the intensity and down hard hotness of it. (Yeah, Cam. Only for you, babe. LOL) Molds are meant to be broken and this is it. I have sold my soul to Cam. In a parallel universe, he would have been mine. Completely and utterly mine. (Take it easy, Christina. I know he’s yours. ;) ) If before I said; I ate the words, this time I breathed them in. Even if sometimes I found myself wanting to bitch slap the hell outta Cam! But; I overcame and continued reading. The depth of this story still amazes me. How the author keep’s me in my toes and suspense is pure torture, but so satisfactory when I understand her motive of it. (Sometimes) It’s not easy to have one’s heart beating frenetically when reading about this bad boy; her twists are flawless and unique. Also, I kinda developed a sick and twisted perversion of keeping Merk, too. (I’m not cheating on you, Cam!) But, Merk became an important puzzle piece; so much that I was imagining him and Christina as a couple. (I mean, come on! They have potential!) However, maybe, just maybe things are better that way, because I swoon for Merk, but I don’t want him to die and not by the hands of Cam. (I know; I will not hold my breath for that.) While there’s so much feels about this book; I have to say one last thing: Love is Love. And Cam will not let it go astray.

Moroad MC is my new addiction....Orange really is the new black

Moroad MC has become my new addiction. I finished the book last night. I already need my next fix. I want, no, I need to know what happens with Jeremy, Cam and the rest of the group. Against my better judgement I have fallen for this band of criminals that think nothing of killing to protect their way of life. I have come to understand the mentality of the ex-con and the convict portrayed in the series (This is not easy for me to admit as an ex-dispatcher married to a retired cop). This is the second book in what I hope to be a very long series. If you haven't read Wrapped Around Him get it now and fall in love with Cam. Cam has had a hard life and it doesn't seem to be getting any easier. He has a lot on his shoulders as president of the club. He has to protect the members and make sure they have an income. He has to find ways to keep Christina from fleeing. He needs to make sure his past decisions and actions don't blow up in his face. He will protect his club For Life. He will protect Christina For Life. He will protect and keep the truth from Jeremy For Life. But sometimes life has away of taking away those protections. Actions have consequences. Cam's are waiting for him in book three, His Crime.

I am so glad I had bk 2 to this awesome MC series!! Let me just say that it does not disappoint! The twists & turns mixed with secrets will have you on the edge of your seat!!
