I found this book to be a great analysis of the factors and mechanisms that decided the 2012 presidential election. Highly readable and the best book yet on the election. Helped to explain to me why even though polls showed the American people were unhappy with both parties they returned the Democrats to the White House and Senate and the GOP to the House.

A cult classic

According to the publisher, Seconds is a cult classic. I must belong to the wrong cult because I wasn't familiar with it until it appeared in a new edition.

Should Wilson leave his life behind? Should he start again? He gets along with his wife but passion, even affection, has long disappeared. He rarely hears from his daughter. His job at the bank provides him with a comfortable living but its routine nature is less than satisfying. It's a difficult decision to make but, as someone tells him, "there never was a struggle in the soul of a good man that wasn't hard."

These questions arise when Wilson (who isn't yet known by that name) gets a call from a dead friend who recommends a service that offers its clients a rebirth. Wilson doesn't quite understand what the service is all about, but his friend arranges an appointment and Wilson keeps it. The firm provides Wilson with a faked death complete with a corpse that passes as his own, then gives him a new appearance, occupation (artist, complete with a fine arts degree, portfolio, and solid reviews), and residence.

Reinventing oneself as a completely new person, leaving the old self behind, is an inviting fantasy, but Wilson learns (and this, I think, is the story's point) that it isn't as pleasant as we imagine it to be. It isn't easy to "cast off all the old associations and memories on which he had become accustomed to depend." In fact, once Wilson is "dead," he defies the rules by investigating his old life as others saw him. Unsurprisingly, he's not pleased with what he learns, or with the knowledge that he is so little missed. The fate of those, like Wilson, who don't follow the rules, who don't adjust well to rebirth, is the story's kicker.

If Seconds is indeed a cult classic, I can understand why. Soylent Green is something of a cult classic for similar reasons: there's a sort of irony in the surprise ending and the story can be seen as a commentary on the true value of human life. Seconds sends additional messages: Dreams don't always come true, particularly when the dream isn't yours to begin with. And: If you want to abandon your life because you've made a botch of it and start over, what makes you think you'll do any better the second time around? As with Soylent Green, you need to accept a certain measure of implausibility to enjoy Seconds, but enjoy it I did. I guess that means I've joined a new cult.

"Seconds"

Originally released in 1963, and made into a movie starring Rock Hudson in 1966, David Ely's short science fiction book has been rereleased in 2013, and feels destined to be remade into a scifi summer blockbuster. While at times the novel feels very dated, there are many themes in the book that resonate with today's reader and everything going on in the world.

Antiochus Wilson has the classic sixties life: a decent job which he has done well in and climbed the ranks, making a decent wage; at home he has a wonderful and dutiful wife; a daughter who has grown up and is living elsewhere now; but he is bored with his life. He has a couple of hobbies, like painting sometimes in the garage, or taking his boat out, but otherwise he's just fed-up with everything. So when he gets the address and note that will change his life, he jumps at the opportunity.

Skipping out of work on lunch, he heads to the clandestine address on the other side of town. He finds himself in a strange warehouse where a stranger tells him to put on overalls and dirty himself up a bit. Then they head to another destination incognito and so starts the first minute of his new life. Antiochus "Tony" Wilson is being given a second, new life. Agreeing on an expensive package, he is killed off; a perfect cadaver left in his place, while he undergoes reconstructive surgery and comes out a new, handsomer man. A new life is created for him: a successful artist, with a new home in California. He is famous, people love him, especially the young models who post nude for him. What could be better?

Except Antiochus Wilson, for some reason, can't let go of his past; can't let go of his wife, or his daughter whom he rarely saw.

Seconds, in some ways, feels like a modern James Bond movie, where women play minor secondary characters, serving the men, yet everything else feels current and meaningful. The book plays around with the concept of identity and who one really is, and the true power of family. The company that gives these men second, new lives was conceived as a brilliant breakthrough that every man would want, but that seems not to be the case.

Are you frustrated with your life? Tired of your boring, mundane existence? Ever wish you could chuck everything and start over? Seconds is the story of a man who does just that, and lives to regret it.

Seconds' protagonist (whom we know only by his adopted name of Wilson) procures the exclusive services of a mysterious organization, which, for a price, creates new lives for its customers. After carefully arranging the demise or disappearance of a client, this organization then surgically alters that client's appearance. After a long period of convalescence and physical training, the client is provided with a new identity and alternative lifestyle.

Most clients quickly adapt to their new lives, but some, like Wilson, have a harder time. Wilson longs for the life he gave up, but finds, upon investigation, that he is not really missed by his family and acquaintances. The organization, which depends upon secrecy for survival, cannot tolerate such backsliding and brings Wilson back into the fold. Eventually realizing that his old life is in fact over, Wilson blithely resigns himself to the new, only to discover he has forfeited both. The brutal ending, while expected, is still shocking, primarily because Wilson doesn't see it coming.

Seconds is a tight, disturbing little book, one which proves the old adage, "Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it." After finishing, you'll probably conclude that your present life, no matter how humdrum or challenging it may be, is not so bad after all.

Electromechanics: Principles, Concepts, and Devices, Second Edition, assumes no previous mechanical training or understanding of mechanical units of measurement since it begins with a review of number notation, systems of measurement, and conversion between and within measuring systems. It continues to the principles of linear motion (Newton's laws, time, distance, speed, acceleration, etc.) and then progresses through a series of simple machines and their principles, ending with several applications dealing with lubrication and bearings. Once this series of topics is completed, the study of mechanics continues with the concepts and principles of rotary motion and its application to the transmission of power. Mechanical applications include the study of various radial and axial power-transmission machine elements (such as couplings, gearing, and belt and chain drives), oscillatory-motion mechanisms, and intermittent-motion mechanisms. The mechanical section concludes with the study of motion characteristics—constant velocity, constant acceleration, and jerk.

The remainder of the book deals with principles of electrical and magnetic circuits and devices, power, work (energy), applications of transformers, overcurrent devices, relays, contactors, starters, and solenoids. The text concludes with the study of sequential process control, ladder diagrams, and motors, both ac and do as well as adjustable frequency ac drives, stepper motors, and an introduction to automatic control systems.

This text uses both the British Engineering System, or BES (English system), and the International System of Units, or SI (metric system), in the study of mechanics (distance, speed, acceleration, work, and power). Both systems are still studied, even today, because many parts suppliers list replacement parts, tools, and equipment in English units, whereas new equipment and products are increasingly specified in metric units. As in the past, technicians who work with mechanical equipment as well as electrical and electronic equipment must be educated in both the SI and BES systems.

About the Author
Sarah Bakewell had a wandering childhood in Europe, Australia and England. This remarkable book is the perfect primer on the most noble everyman soul-searcher Michael de Montaigne. Ms. Bakewell honors her own love of the16th-century founder of the personal essay by giving readers a carefully rendered, diligently sourced guided tour of Montaigne's timeless accounting of his own heart and soul. How To Live is mostly about just how to be in life and in the world. It loses nothing in translation nor across the passing of 500 years since Montaigne wrote his famous collection of essays. . With war and plague literally at his gate, Montaigne recused himself from the outside turmoil and set out to study his own hopes and misgivings. Bakewell shows his legacy is nothing short of a road atlas for the human condition through the ages. Bakewell's digest, in words and pictures, is an inspiration for those who would honestly take the same path today.
Readers should be advised that Montaigne's efforts are not of the same sort as the Facebook and Tweet pronouncements of our selfie-centered times. Mountain's careful reconnoiter of his own life and times that Bakewell has selected here depicts a person determined to know himself in the world, not to show himself off to the world.
Perhaps most refreshing of all Montaigne's enviable traits that Bakewell takes particular effort to point out is his abiding caution to readers of his essays that his opinions are his alone and as such contain the caveat that he could be wrong. What a thing to read in our current age of heralding the know-it-all who most often knows the least of all.

How to ENJOY Your Intellectual Life: Read this book

Sarah Bakewell is a genius. In this book she gives us a moving biography of Montaigne, a history of the genesis and contents of his marvelous essays, an introduction to the history of editing his great masterpiece, and a lively and fascinating narrative of informed and popular responses to his book in successive eras. Montaigne very much feels like real presence in this book, one with a distinctive personality that is vividly represented by the author. One feels that Bakewell, along with hundreds or thousands of earlier readers have developed a personal relationship with the great writer, and Bakewell helps explain why this in the case even though an overwhelming share of readers of his essays of course have had no contact with him, except through his essays. Bakewell also does a wonderful and interesting job of explaining the very different critical reception Montaigne's essays received among his contemporaries and in succeeding generations of readers, both in France and elsewhere.

The ingenuity of the biography helps explain why critical reception of Bakewell's own book was so positive. But the plain fact is that Bakewell is also a stylish writer, capable of holding our fascinated (and occasionally amused) attention, even when she is discussing the minutiae of successive editions or of obscure editorial quarrels. The book was warmly recommended to me by a friend who said flatly it was the best book he'd read in a year or, indeed, in any recent year. You'll probably find this kind of enthusiasm in many of the Amazon reviews. If you're interested in philosophy or in a charismatic writer and thinker in a long bygone, tumultuous era, and if you care about artful construction and stylish writing, this might be the book for you. It certainly was for me.

A Fine Biography of a Very Important Writer

Sarah Bakewell’s biography of Montaigne won the National Book Critics Circle Award for biography in 2010. It is a fine book, one that will engage the attention of all readers interested in the subject. That subject, of course, is very wide-ranging. Inspired by the philosophers of antiquity, Montaigne is one of the principal French writers of the Renaissance. To a degree he created the ‘essay’ form and his work has been pivotal for later thinkers. John Florio’s English translation was taught—in my day—as a work of literature itself and it helped to popularize a writer ‘adopted’ by the English as one of their own, at least in interests, spirit and unique personality. Montaigne was claimed by the romantics; he influenced Nietzsche, heartened the postmodernists and remains a writer of global importance and influence.

SB’s biography answers the question, ‘how to live?’ in twenty chapters, each of them keyed to a theme in Montaigne’s work. Hence, chapter 9: “Q. How to live? A. Be convivial: live with others.” The themes, however, do not trump the biography. This is not an endless examination of thematic content with an occasional look at the events in Montaigne’s life. It is a systematic biography held together by thin thematic divisions.

It is also a very learned biography, expanding at length, e.g., on the civil wars of the period, the driving ideologies, weaponry and specific details, both personal and political. It studies, e.g., the manner in which the texts of the Essays have come down to us, (what we would call) the copy texts, the emendations, the condensations, and so on. There is comparatively little on the content of the Essays themselves, ‘comparatively’ being the operative word. We learn a great deal about Montaigne’s classical influences, the nature of his pyrhonnism, the dimensions of his political associations, his personal relationships, his estate, its winemaking, and so on, but the only essay that is discussed at some length is (as one would expect) the longest of the essays, the Apology for Raymond Sebond.

It is sometimes said that the first requirement for a great biography is the author’s love for her subject (balanced, always, by a willingness to speak the truth, wherever its elements might fall). SB clearly admires Montaigne and wishes that today’s thinkers, writers and politicians (Montaigne served in all three capacities) would read him, be inspired by him and take lessons from him.

The writing is crisp and clear, direct and candid. While it is undergirded by a great deal of scholarship that scholarship does not drag the book down and bore the reader with tedious details. It contains a bibliography, index and series of endnotes, sufficient to guide the reader to other texts and explore/verify issues that have come under question.

The book is very much like its subject—a pleasant, human and humane read that takes on difficult subjects with a light touch and details experiences that will find echoes in the reader’s own heart.
