East meets West onstage
By Michael J. Mazza
If you liked the segments of the film "The Joy Luck Club" which took place in China, you'll love David Henry Hwang's play "Golden Child." Although Hwang is probably better known for his play "M. Butterfly," "Golden Child" is a remarkable piece of writing which deserves attention. According to the production history included in the book version, an early version of "Golden Child" premiered in 1996, and a later version was presented at Broadway's Longacre Theatre in 1998. But "Golden Child" is also one of those plays which succeeds purely as a readers' text.
"Golden Child" opens with Andrew, a Westernized man of Chinese heritage, who is visited by the ghost of his Chinese-born mother. This brief prologue leads to the story of his mother's girlhood in China. We meet Andrews's grandfather, Tieng-Bin; Tieng-Bin's three wives; and the Western clergyman who seeks to convert them to Christianity.
"Golden Child" is a thought-provoking exploration of family life and cross-cultural contact. There is both humor and tragedy in the dialogue. The story addresses such topics as polygamy, foot-binding, ancestor worship, and opium use in traditional Chinese culture. Hwang's ironic portrayal of the politics of "conversion" may be a revelation to those Western Christians who harbor romantic, idealistic notions about bringing the "light" to non-European peoples. I was very impressed with Hwang's writing, and I highly recommend "Golden Child."

A highly underrated masterpiece
By David Dressler
I will never understand why this play tanked in New York. It is a simple, elegant tale about assimilation and familial dysfunction. David Henry Hwang is a masterful writer, and this is some of his best work. The only weakness is its ending, which falls a little flat as a character (who is clearly the author) explains the entire point, as if the audience missed it. Although this (like most of his work) is about Chinese, it should be read by people of all walks of life.

Virtually Flawless
By Jaydekitten
I don't normally read plays. I always feel as if I will be missing something by reading the script rather than seeing it performed. After reading David Henry Hwang's "Golden Child", however, I am hoping that I will one have the opportunity to see this play in person.

Hwang mentions in the introduction that "Golden Child" underwent several rewrites until the final draft was completed. The end product, to me, is utterly flawless. A perfect mesh of comedy and tragedy unfolds as Hwang confronts the effects a man's conversion to Christianity has in early 20th century China.

A very captivating read, I highly recommend David Henry Hwang's "Golden Child".

Philosophical Dilemmas: A Pro and Con Introduction to the Major Questions and Philosophers, by Phil Washburn

Philosophical Dilemmas: A Pro and Con Introduction to the Major Questions and Philosophers, Fourth Edition, outlines the classic arguments made by philosophers through the ages. It features sixty-three brief topical essays by author Phil Washburn organized around thirty-one fundamental philosophical questions like "Does God exist?" "Is morality relative?" and "Are we free?" Each essay takes a definite stand and promotes it vigorously, creating a sharp contrast between the two positions and giving each abstract theory a more personal and believable "voice." The accessible writing style and conflicting answers encourage students to examine the different positions and to think carefully about which essay makes the stronger case.

This fourth edition, a major revision, now enriches the discussion of each philosophical question by adding fifty-four brief essays--two in each chapter--on great philosophers who held conflicting viewpoints on the issues covered. Additionally, the chapters have been rearranged so that these essays and the philosophers discussed appear in approximate chronological order, from Plato and Protagoras to Wittgenstein and Searle. The text is enhanced by numerous pedagogical features including an introduction to each issue, key terms, chapter summaries, study questions after each essay, chronologies, a glossary, and an appendix on how to write an essay.

A Companion Website at www.oup.com/us/washburn contains online sources and self-test questions for students and numerous instructor resources: introductions to the issues; summaries of the topical essays; summary points, PowerPoint-based slides, and test questions for the historical essays; answers to the critical questions that follow each essay; test questions on the topical essays; suggestions for class discussions; and a list of online resources.

Review

"Washburn's style is clear, concise, engaging, and fair. He is able to defend both pro and con positions so well that you cannot judge a bias or personal preference. This is commendable, since both sides are argued passionately and accurately. I have found no comparable or superior text."--William Rodriguez, Bethune Cookman University

The Makers of American Wine: A Record of Two Hundred Years, by Thomas Pinney

Americans learned how to make wine successfully about two hundred years ago, after failing for more than two hundred years. Thomas Pinney takes an engaging approach to the history of American wine by telling its story through the lives of 13 people who played significant roles in building an industry that now extends to every state. While some names—such as Mondavi and Gallo—will be familiar, others are less well known. These include the wealthy Nicholas Longworth, who produced the first popular American wine; the German immigrant George Husmann, who championed the native Norton grape in Missouri and supplied rootstock to save French vineyards from phylloxera; Frank Schoonmaker, who championed the varietal concept over wines with misleading names; and Maynard Amerine, who helped make UC Davis a world-class winemaking school.

Entertaining narrative history of colorful personalities in American wine history.
By Kenneth Umbach
This is an entertaining, wide-ranging overview based on key figures in the industry over the last two centuries, mostly drawn from Pinney's massive two-volume (and four-century) history of wine in America. Colorful characters abound. Great book for folks with an interest in American wines and where they came from.

One Hundred Fifty Years of Failure: An Absorbing Chronicle
By DPHBrooklyn
This review originally appeared on 205Food.com

John James Dufour arrived in America from Switzerland in 1796, convinced he could turn his adopted country into a wine-growing, wine-loving nation. He believed this, even though Thomas Jefferson had tried and failed to grow the grape. He believed, despite the black rot and other vine diseases that had devastated all European vinifera planted in America.

Dufour's initial effort, "First Vineyard" in Kentucky, was aptly named. It was decimated by disease its first year. Yet, some vines survived the wreckage, even thrived. These hardy vines (unknown to Dufour) were a chance crossing of vinifera and an American grape, creating the Alexander, the first significant French-American hybrid. With the help of new settlers from Switzerland and a loan from the U.S. Congress, the first commercial winery was established in America, near Vevey, Indiana.

The wine made from the Alexander grape was probably rather poor. President Jefferson was polite and noncommital after opening a bottle. Another taster said that "nothing but a strong effort at courtesy, however, can induce anyone seriously to call it wine..." Although the wine business in Vevey flourished for a time, disease battered its vines, and by the 1830s it was finished.

Other visionaries took up the cause of Dufour in the following decades. Nicholas Longworth, a successful businessman and amateur horticulturist, found that the Catawba grape flourished near Cincinnati, and by 1859 Ohio "led the nation in the production of wine." But disease was again a problem, and Catawba an easy mark, making production irregular. In the 1850s there were only three successful vintages.

After 1860 the wine business began to grow rapidly in California, mainly in the Los Angeles area, commercialization following the padres and their wine making. The Mission Grape, an obscure European vinifera, grew well and made such successful wine that the town of Anaheim was founded by a contingent of German immigrants just to grow it. Very productive for a time, these viticulteurs produced 1.25 million gallons by 1884. But guess what? Pierce's Disease (native to the American South) infected their fields in the 1880s, and by 1891 nearly all the Mission grape vines had perished.

Is it time for a brief recap? Grapes were planted in many different locations in the 1800s. Indifferent to undrinkable wine was made. Most of the vineyards were successful at first, but all were eventually felled by disease. By the time the prohibition movement began to gather force in the late 1800s, no teetotalers fumed about "demon wine" or the depravity of wine bars. No, the visionaries in Thomas Pinney's book, the men who saw grapevines growing in every locale, from coast to coast, had failed. America was not a wine-drinking nation. Not even close.

By the late 1800s there was only one real glimmer of hope. Grape growing was shifting to Northern California, where European vinifera thrived. Producers like Italian Swiss Colony began to pay a great deal of attention to quality. They grew the best vinfera grapes and bottled their own wine, instead of shunting it off on the rails, in barrel or tank car, its destiny to be mishandled and adulterated by a bottler elsewhere in America.

But northern California offered only an illusory hope. Disaster was certain to find the wine industry once again, and it did. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 landed the first punch, destroying enormous stockpiles of wine. The prohibition movement landed a series of blows in the early 1900s, as it chased wine entrepreneurs like Paul Garrett, the baron of Scuppernong, out of one state after another. The enactment of prohibition in 1920 was the knockout punch.

Or was it? No, there were more indignities to come. The loss of wine-making skills during prohibition led to large scale production of plonk in the 1930s. The disruptions of World War II and the collapse of the wine industry afterwards left "the mood of the industry resembling the bad old days of the depression."

In the post-war years Maynard Amerine, of the University of California at Davis, urged growers to adopt better varietals and plant them in suitable locations. His advice was mainly ignored, and he "was so discouraged by the apparent failure of his work to make any difference that he thought of leaving Davis for work elsewhere." Frank Schoonmaker, the preeminent wine writer of of his time, urged California wine makers to label their bottles with grape names and specific locations, for instance Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, not "Hearty Burgundy" or "Pink Chablis." But his suggestions were not welcome, and the author notes that "it is difficult to imagine the violence with which [his ideas] were opposed at the time."

If Thomas Pinney's book The Makers of American Wine: A Record of Two Hundred Years had covered only one hundred fifty years, an appropriate title would have been "The Makers of American Wine: A Long History of Their Many Failures." But miraculously, in the 1960's public taste began to change. Winemakers smartened up. Amerine's advice was finally heard and Frank Schoonmaker's Encyclopedia of Wine (1964) sold well and was read. Robert Mondavi and his followers led the transformation of the California wine industry.

The Makers of American Wine consists of thirteen chapters, each describing the contribution of one person to the industry. Some of the individuals made positive and lasting contributions (John James Dufour, Frank Schoonmaker, Maynard Amerine, Robert Mondavi), others were very successful businessmen but now forgotten (Charles Kohler, Paul Garrett), and still others certainly left their mark, even if it was not necessarily positive (Ernest and Julio Gallo).

Choosing thirteen individuals to represent two hundred years of history isn't easy, especially since the events of the last fifty years are much more important than the preceding one hundred and fifty. Author Pinney's decision to end the book with a profile of Cathy Corison seems particularly odd. Yes, she is a talented winemaker, but her impact on the industry has been negligible, and she has not led a charge of women into the field. Her inclusion is especially strange given that Robert M. Parker is not one of the chosen thirteen. One could easily argue that Mr. Parker has had as much influence on the U.S. wine industry as anyone profiled in this book.

The best chapters in The Makers of American Wine cover largely forgotten history -- Dufour, the California Wine Association, the story of Italian Swiss Colony. Sections on Robert Mondavi and Ernest and Julio Gallo may seem too familiar, lacking drama, especially for those who have read The House of Mondavi or Blood and Wine, the story of the Gallos. But the arc of this book is impressive, and by its end you feel wonderment that the wine industry in America ever found its stride.

A Slave No More: Two Men Who Escaped to Freedom, Including Their Own Narratives of Emancipation, by David W. Blight Ph. D.

Slave narratives, some of the most powerful records of our past, are extremely rare, with only fifty-five post–Civil War narratives surviving. A mere handful are first-person accounts by slaves who ran away and freed themselves. Now two newly uncovered narratives, and the biographies of the men who wrote them, join that exclusive group with the publication of A Slave No More, a major new addition to the canon of American history. Handed down through family and friends, these narratives tell gripping stories of escape: Through a combination of intelligence, daring, and sheer luck, the men reached the protection of the occupying Union troops. David W. Blight magnifies the drama and significance by prefacing the narratives with each man’s life history. Using a wealth of genealogical information, Blight has reconstructed their childhoods as sons of white slaveholders, their service as cooks and camp hands during the Civil War, and their climb to black working-class stability in the north, where they reunited their families.

In the stories of Turnage and Washington, we find history at its most intimate, portals that offer a rich new answer to the question of how four million people moved from slavery to freedom. In A Slave No More, the untold stories of two ordinary men take their place at the heart of the American experience.

Very thorough and well-written
By Adam K.
I've only had this a couple of weeks but I can say that it is very thorough and informative. I will try to update this review as I get through it more, but so far it was absolutely worth the price. I'd recommend it to anybody looking to learn for a resource on current customization options in AutoCAD.

Wished it covered .NET too.
By Amazon Customer
While this book is well written and researched I found that VBA is deprecated and .NET is the direction things are going with respect to writing plug-ins for AutoCAD. I wish the author would have included .NET in the otherwise comprehesive coverage of options.

Methods of Multivariate Analysis (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics), by Alvin C. Rencher, William F. Christensen

Praise for the Second Edition

"This book is a systematic, well-written, well-organized text on multivariate analysis packed with intuition and insight . . . There is much practical wisdom in this book that is hard to find elsewhere."
—IIE Transactions

Filled with new and timely content, Methods of Multivariate Analysis, Third Edition provides examples and exercises based on more than sixty real data sets from a wide variety of scientific fields. It takes a "methods" approach to the subject, placing an emphasis on how students and practitioners can employ multivariate analysis in real-life situations.

This Third Edition continues to explore the key descriptive and inferential procedures that result from multivariate analysis. Following a brief overview of the topic, the book goes on to review the fundamentals of matrix algebra, sampling from multivariate populations, and the extension of common univariate statistical procedures (including t-tests, analysis of variance, and multiple regression) to analogous multivariate techniques that involve several dependent variables. The latter half of the book describes statistical tools that are uniquely multivariate in nature, including procedures for discriminating among groups, characterizing low-dimensional latent structure in high-dimensional data, identifying clusters in data, and graphically illustrating relationships in low-dimensional space. In addition, the authors explore a wealth of newly added topics, including:

  • Confirmatory Factor Analysis
  • Classification Trees
  • Dynamic Graphics
  • Transformations to Normality
  • Prediction for Multivariate Multiple Regression
  • Kronecker Products and Vec Notation

New exercises have been added throughout the book, allowing readers to test their comprehension of the presented material. Detailed appendices provide partial solutions as well as supplemental tables, and an accompanying FTP site features the book's data sets and related SAS code.

Requiring only a basic background in statistics, Methods of Multivariate Analysis, Third Edition is an excellent book for courses on multivariate analysis and applied statistics at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. The book also serves as a valuable reference for both statisticians and researchers across a wide variety of disciplines.

When measuring several variables on a complex experimental unit, it is often necessary to analyze the variables simultaneously, rather than isolate them and consider them individually. Multivariate analysis enables researchers to explore the joint performance of such variables and to determine the effect of each variable in the presence of the others. The Second Edition of Alvin Rencher?s Methods of Multivariate Analysis provides students of all statistical backgrounds with both the fundamental and more sophisticated skills necessary to master the discipline.

To illustrate multivariate applications, the author provides examples and exercises based on fifty-nine real data sets from a wide variety of scientific fields. Rencher takes a "methods" approach to his subject, with an emphasis on how students and practitioners can employ multivariate analysis in real-life situations. The Second Edition contains revised and updated chapters from the critically acclaimed First Edition as well as brand-new chapters on:

  • Cluster analysis
  • Multidimensional scaling
  • Correspondence analysis
  • Biplots

Each chapter contains exercises, with corresponding answers and hints in the appendix, providing students the opportunity to test and extend their understanding of the subject. Methods of Multivariate Analysis provides an authoritative reference for statistics students as well as for practicing scientists and clinicians.

Amstat News asked three review editors to rate their top five favorite books in the September 2003 issue. Methods of Multivariate Analysis was among those chosen.

Rencher writes very well
By Michael R. Chernick
This is a clearly written text on multivariate analysis. As there are many excellent texts both involving theory and applications, using geometric approaches as in Eaton's biik and algebraic approaches as in Anderson's it is important to know the differences and the avanatges and disadvantages to each. Rencher's book has a lot of good applications and is very applications oriented in its approach. It does not cover structural equation models. The field of multivariate statistics is very broad and topics such as classification (or pattern recognition), structural equation models and factor analysis are often better understood by reading specialized texts such as McLachlan for pattern recognition, Bollen for structural equations and Harman for factor analysis.

Rencher's book is modern, well-written and very much up to date.

Very Helpful!
By A Customer
This book is great! Some derivations and occasional proofs are included in the text, but it has clearly been written with the applied researcher in mind. In the author's words he has provided "careful intuitive explanations of the concepts and [has] included many insights typically available only in journal articles or in the minds of practitioners" with his primary objective being "clarity of exposition." I have found it to be very easy to read with numerous helpful examples (the data sets and SAS command files for which are available via an ftp site).
This brand new version includes new chapters on cluster analysis, multidimensional scaling, correspondence analysis, and biplots.

concise and clear
By Chen, Yi
This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to multivariate analysis. Although concise, the explanation is clear and intuitive, of course, some preliminary knowledge of statistics and linear algabra is necessary to follow this book.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, March 2011: Moonwalking with Einstein follows Joshua Foer's compelling journey as a participant in the U.S. Memory Championship. As a science journalist covering the competition, Foer became captivated by the secrets of the competitors, like how the current world memory champion, Ben Pridmore, could memorize the exact order of 1,528 digits in an hour. He met with individuals whose memories are truly unique—from one man whose memory only extends back to his most recent thought, to another who can memorize complex mathematical formulas without knowing any math. Brains remember visual imagery but have a harder time with other information, like lists, and so with the help of experts, Foer learned how to transform the kinds of memories he forgot into the kind his brain remembered naturally. The techniques he mastered made it easier to remember information, and Foer's story demonstrates that the tricks of the masters are accessible to anyone. --Miriam Landis

From Booklist
If you sometimes can't remember where you put your car keys or, like Foer, the car itself, don't panic. You're not alone, and you can do something about it. In this intriguing look at the nature of memory, Foer reassures us that we don't need to acquire a better memory; we just need to use the one we have more effectively. Foer introduces us to people whose memories are both astonishing, like the man who could memorize 1,528 random digits in order, and frightening, such as a man with such an extreme case of amnesia that he doesn't know his own age and can't remember that he has a memory problem. He explores various ways in which we test our memories, such as the extensive training British cabbies must undergo. He also discusses ways we can train ourselves to have better memories, like the PAO system, in which, for example, every card in a deck is associated with an image of a specific person, action, or object. An engaging, informative, and for the forgetful, encouraging book. --David Pitt

Review
In this marvelous book, Joshua Foer invents a new genre of non-fiction. This is a work of science journalism wrapped around an adventure story, a bildungsroman fused to a vivid investigation of human memory. If you want to understand how we remember, and how we can all learn to remember better, then read this book

Amazingly Interesting and Helpful
By David Sheppard
This is one of those rare books that is not only a joy to read, but also immensely helpful. It can help all of us with something that is at once troublesome and worrisome: our memory. It does this with ease, not teaching us some grueling rote memory technique, but one that is easy, natural and intuitive. Yet Moonwalking with Einstein turns out to not be exclusively a how-to book on memory. So what is it?

Well, yes, it is about memory and how to improve it, but it is at once a history of techniques, a description of what memory is and what can go wrong with it, and also a running narrative of how the author, a journalist himself with no special memory skills, becomes one of the most proficient memory athletes in America.

I'd learned a mnemonic device to aid memorization decades ago while in college, and found it to be helpful, but for some reason I'd abandoned the technique once I graduated. But Moonwalking with Einstein expands the mnemonic technique I learned back then by use of something of which I'd never heard: the "Memory Palace." The Memory Palace exploits our inherent skill for remembering images and spatial locations, harnesses these two abilities we all posses in abundance, and relates them to the memorization of numbers, lists and assortments of other difficult to remember items. The amazing thing is that the Memory Palace not only makes memorization easy, it also makes it fun.

What makes the book so interesting is that it is narrative non-fiction and reads like a novel. The author locks his conflict with his own memory early on, gives a sense of rising tension as he accumulates the forces to overcome its limitations, and resolves this internal conflict at the end when he participates in the US Memory Championship. I didn't read it as urgently as I did today's number one bestseller, Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken, but still, I couldn't put it down.

In Chapter Five, I scanned the "to-do" list of fifteen items on pages 92/3 that the author had to memorize in his initial attempt, and developed the technique for myself as I read about the author memorizing it. As my Memory Palace, I used an old home of a high school friend with which I was still familiar, constructing useful details as I went. When I had finished reading about the author memorizing the list (took me about five minutes), I had memorized it myself, and I found that the items were not only immediately memorable, but that the list of items and their sequence was still with me days later, and so imbedded in my memory that I'm sure I'll ever forget it. All this, I accomplished effortlessly. This is a truly remarkable feat for me because I'm almost seventy years old and have chronic fatigue syndrome, which adversely affects all aspects of my memory.

It has also given me hope that I might finally learn ancient Greek. I tried to learn it several years ago, but found building a vocabulary so difficult that I abandoned the project. Rote memory was just too much trouble. I am interested in all things Greek, and as it turns out, the Memory Palace technique was invented in the fifth century BC by Simonides following his narrow escape from the collapse of a building. This in itself is a story you'll be interested in reading about. The author says that since the time of this ancient Greek, "the art of memory has been about creating architectural spaces in the imagination." Having been to Greece twice, I have all the makings of a superb Greek Memory Palace. While traveling around Greece and the western coast of Turkey for ten weeks, I visited many cities and islands: Athens, Thebes, Delphi, Ithaca, Mykonos, Delos, Santorini, etc. I can't count all the archaeological sites I visited. What I'm creating isn't just any old Memory Palace but actually a Memory Country. Within each location, I can identify as many locations for storing words and meanings as I need. But not only that, I can also use characters from Greek mythology to create actions and images to reinforce the material, as the author suggests. All this constitutes my Greek Memory Palace: the location where I will store ancient Greek words and meanings as I learn the language, in accordance with the instructions learned in Moonwalking with Einstein. None of it was difficult. I picked it up as I read the book.

The author describes how in the past people viewed their minds as something to perfect by loading it with all sorts of intellectual material. "People used to labor to furnish their minds. They invested in the acquisition of memories the same way we invest in the acquisition of things." [page 134] Some even believed that "the art of memory was a secret key to unlocking the occult structure of the universe." [page 151] This has given me an entirely new view of how to perceive my own mind and nourish it in the future.

The author also discusses how we came to lose touch with our ability to remember with the invention of the printed word. The history of that estrangement and how inventions like Wikipedia and the Internet foster that estrangement is a very interesting story. The author makes the reader aware of what is happening to us and provides a way to project ourselves into the future without suffering so much of technology's debilitating effects.

Perhaps the reason this book is so successful is that the reader never loses sight of the practical use of the information the author is providing because the author is discovering it himself and actively making use of it in his quest to make it into the US Memory Championship.

This is an important book. Everyone can benefit from reading it.

only on page 100, but have been trying the techniques on my own. Almost literally unbelievable.
By . . . AsISeeEm
So this is not a self-help book but a story of how the author was introduced to memory champs and their techniques and how he came to use them to get to the world memory championships.

I always thought I had a bad memory, especially for names - when I met people, I wouldn't remember them a week later, without some context. A few years ago I took a test on line for prospagnosia - the inability to remember faces - and I crushed it. So I had to revise my self-image regarding my memory; it's good for faces.

This book explains that our memories are much better at remembering images (and why).

So just a few pages in, I decided to try out the first technique of making names into images. Here's what I did.

Mr. Foer talks about the "curve of forgetfulness" invented by Hermann Ebbinghaus. I figured there's no way I'd normally recall this germanic name. So I thought about it for a while and came up with this image: A smirking woman, indicating the rastafarian man next to her with a jerk of her thumb. That's "Her mon," apologies to the Jamaican accent. Then I put them in chairs on the deck of a white clapboard house, which itself is half falling into a river as the tide ebbs. Hermann Ebbinghaus. A day later it took me maybe 7 seconds to recall this guy's name! I was seriously flabbergasted. And overjoyed. I decided to try it again.

My second attempt was with another name in the book. Wilder Penfield popularized the idea that everything we see and hear and sense, remain in our brains somewhere, and we just need to recall the details (this apparently is no longer the consensus). I thought about it and came up with pens with spiky hair, planted in a field like wheat blowing in the breeze, except they have their hands over their heads and they are shaking them wildly in dance. Days later I can recall this guy's odd name. The only complication here, to be honest, is that sometimes I reverse his first and last names... But WOW.

I also put a third name into memory and why. George Miller discovered that we can keep 7, plus or minus 2, pieces of info in our short term memory at a time. To remember his name, I pictured "King George" in full regalia (I actually have no idea what he really looked like but it doesn't matter), tied to where the mule or horse would make flour by walking around and around the mill. I have him sweating in the sun as he toils. There's an american flag in there as a reminder that he is King George. Then I put a mustache on him.

Why the 'stache? Because early in the book we're introduced to 'S' Dr. Luria's famous synesthesia/memory study. S always saw the number 7 as a man with a mustache. George Miller discovered "plus or minus 7." A day later I was trying to remember the third person I committed to memory and correctly came up with George Miller. But I didn't know who he was, when I suddenly recalled the mustache. Why, I wondered, had I given him a mustache? When the answer hit me I almost fell down. I exaggerate but I was thrilled.

This was all before page 30.

By the time he explained what a memory palace was and walked us through the first example (a shopping list), I had little problem memorizing the entire thing. Whoa. Garlic pickles, cottage cream, smoked salmon preferably with peat smoke, 6 bottles of white wine, 3 pairs of socks, 3 hoola hoops with maybe a spare, a snorkel, dry ice, email sophia, paul newman movie, skin-colored cat suit, elk sausages, director's chair and bullhorn, ropes and climbing harness, barometer. I might have left something out, I created that memory palace about an hour ago.

Simply amazing.

Foer mentions that these techniques were considered part of one's education for hundreds if not thousands of years, yet today we teach people to eat right and exercise without giving any lessons on how to properly use our memories. Let's get on that.

Should have read in high school. Still a great read for anyone at any age.
By Sathya Ramanathan
Can I improve my memory? I am no longer someone who is going to school or college. I have crossed over into the mid-life. Is there a way to not forget day-to-day tasks or important things to say during a conversion? Is it even possible or am I essentially stuck with what I have got at this point. I started reading this book to find answers to these questions.

In MoonWalking with Einstein, Joshua Foer takes us through the world of Mental Athletes and memory competitions. He humanizes the mental athletes and says, they are nothing more special than you and I. From his experience competing in US memory championship, he explains that anyone can master these memory techniques through smart training and hard work.

I was always of the opinion that memorization is bad and rote-memorization is really bad. He makes convincing arguments that memorization (filing your memories in the correct place in the brain) along with your experiences in a field will help you remember the right thing at the right time. Among other techniques, he introduces Memory Palace - an ancient technique to improve ones memory.

I recently read MindSet by Carol Dweck. In Moonwalking with Einstein, Joshua Foer complements the growth mindset thought by proving that one can accomplish anything with sheer effort, hard work and smart training. I pretty much used kindle audio narration to hear the book, which was excellent. Overall I highly recommend this book.
