Exactly what I needed for my work phone!

We use Samsung's Galaxy Note phones for our work phones, and we just upgraded to the 5. It is definitely a powerful tool; it is almost too powerful on occasion. The capabilities Samsung adds to their devices these days are impressive and intimidating. I found this writer's guide for Chromecast a couple years ago now, and since then he has released stellar guides that really unlock the potential for these Galaxy phones. As I've been on his mailing list for a while, he was nice enough to provide me with an advanced copy of this last week to review. Well I'm here vouching for and buying it for a reason: it's another winner, and writers like this deserve support. After only a week with this guide I'm already using the device differently. This book has stayed pinned to my home screen where I can reference it when I run into a question while using the phone. Pick it up and have you phone work better for you!

All you need to know about using the Note 5

I have bought dozens of user guides over the past twenty-something years. This book is one of the best! It is packed with information and presents it in a way that's easy to follow and understand. I kept my Note 5 right beside the book and found everything to be just as described by the author. The large and clearly marked illustrations certainly helped.

I bought my Note 5 largely for its large screen size. Reading this guide was a revelation to me about its many other features and I highly recommend it. I suppose it would not be useful to "power users," but it is a godsend for those of us non-techies coming to a stylus-pen device from other kinds of smart phones.

I bought this book for an older family friend who just got her first smartphone. She has been happy with it and says it has greatly helped her with the transition. I took a look through it as well (I am not new to Android OS). There is a pretty good spread of information, from the very basics all the way to rooting and using advanced utilities. I wouldn't consider it a complete reference manual, it's more of a series of tutorials and tips & tricks and it does not always discuss every single menu/option available.. Still should be extremely helpful if you're shaky on using your phone - true power users may already know a lot of the information. Still, I did pick up some "hidden" tricks that I did not know of. Overall, worth the money.

Bursting with quality-- don't miss this

I gotta say, this was worth the wait. And the weight!

This book is a *brick*! I'm not kidding, you are going to have to read it at the table. But it is so heavy due to the super thick paper it's printed on and its over-sized layout, which is everything I could have wished for. The pages are MUCH thicker and the inks are MUCH lusher than comic books or soft-cover collections.

The book is definitely taller and wider than the individual comics or soft-cover collections you might already have. This book is 9" x 12", and the original comics are just a little bit bigger than 6" x 10". Inside the book, each cover or section page is printed with a full 9x12 image. The story pages are are bordered with white, so the actual comic images are close to the same size as the originals (slightly wider at 7x10).

What are these white borders for? Besides looking crisp and nice, they often contain commentaries by the authors and artists. Great touch! These lines of text offer little insights into the process of creating the stories and the art as well as impressions about themes and turns of events in the storylines. Sample comment: "On this page, I decided to put Feron in his last change of clothes. He is, in fact, losing layers of clothing as the story goes on. He first loses his hood, then the loses his jacket entirely, making him more visible and more vulnerable as the story gets more dramatic." To give you an idea, the first section, "Redemption", has one of these tiny little commentaries on 39 pages out of the 87 pages of that story.

The hardcover is glossy and thick, the inside pages are semi-gloss and thick (feels like 140# paperweight). It's 100% full color throughout-- even on the pages with black and white sketches, they managed to throw in some colored grid lines or other bits of color. The printing is the super premium pearl style over matte. A pleasure to look at.

The comics take up the first 400 pages of the book. Pages 402-415 are the sketchbook of Omar Francia, including more cool commentary. The last page, 416, is a nice full color ad for "The Art of the Mass Effect Universe", like you'd see at the end of a regular comic book.

I do have one quibble: this books needs a table of contents. How did that get left out?! You have to thumb through the book to find what you are looking for. The pages have labels, so that helps, but still.

Absolutely incredible

This is a must have for any Mass Effect fan. I'd been searching for the novels individually and to find them in one tome was a plus. I was rather taken aback when I opened the box at the sheer size and weight of the book but the detail and quality blew me away. This was worth the wait!

Comic is great. Writers comments at bottom of pages contain spoilers though.

Firstly, my book came with some damage to the hard cover. Most likely it happened during shipping. But if there had been bubble wrap or some kind of packing material in the box it probably wouldn't have happened. The box it came in was clearly dropped at some point.
The comics are awesome. I love the art and story. I'm a big Mass Effect fan. But under some of the comic pages there are comments from the artists and writers. A little commentary. It wouldn't be that bad if they wouldn't have spoilers in their commentary. I'm only half way through and I've read the 3rd spoiler on what's going to happen a few pages later. It's very frustrating. There was one comment that said something like, "this scene will later end in tragedy." So a few pages before it happened I knew someone was going to die. That really sucked. I was just reading it and came across the 3rd spoiler and it prompted me to write this review. "But she would end up restrained..." I really didn't need to know that before it happened. Let me enjoy the comic, don't put spoilers in the commentary!
It's not full of spoilers though. Some of the commentary is interesting. Like when they explain why they put certain words in bold print.
In conclusion, I would have given 5 stars if it weren't for the spoilers. I would have forgiven the damage the book had.

Superb guidelines for effective leadership

Reading the first edition of this fine book over a decade ago left an indelible impression on me, and I'm deeply grateful to the author for sharing his insights. After getting this updated version, I can say it's "needed now more than ever", for all of us in leadership roles... whether it be small business owners/entreprenuers, managers or parents -- this is an ideal book for everyone who seeks to influence and lead others.

The values of making and keeping promises, of setting the tone for expecations and so much more, are finely articulated in this sensational (and surprisingly easy-to-read) book, that makes such an impact. Bravo for a truly fine work -- and many thanks.

A book you can read again and again and learn something

This isn't a book full of practical ideas. It's a book of philosophy about leadership. Max provides a lot of one-liners and full paragraphs that are full of good philosophy as you, as a leader, develop or refine your own personal style of leaders.

For example, he makes this statement "when you ask someone to do something, make sure you wait for an answer". That is a loaded statement as it implies that even in the workplace, people should have a certain amount of choice, and leaders should treat their employees with respect. for their agency But this does not mean his philosophy is wishy-washy -- his philosophy is one that is characterized by respect but also expectations as his ideas on accountability later in the book attest.

Yet another comment he makes "Delegation takes discipline" is loaded with meaning. He doesn't describe what he means by this, but my own experience shows that it takes discipline to delegate, and then let the person deliver on their promise in their own way Leaders must avoid getting involved or taking over before the person has given the delegation their best "shot" Delegation also requires significant discipline and work in preparing for the delegation to identify the right person, think through the desired outcome, identify training, support and resources the person might need. All that comes to mind from a single statement in this book.

I am a professor of business and have been teaching management for 20 years. I know this book is something students read in management classes, but if you are a philosophical person, who wants to think deeply about the philosophy of leaders that Max portrays, this will be a book that you read over and over again. I have read it several times. I apply the principles and I have been getting feedback that my leadership style is effective, and some even say, inspiring. I credit part of that to Max's ideas. My hard copy of the book is marked up with my own comments and references to situations I have experienced that bear directly on the principle Max is describing. I read it again partly to see my own comments as they keep the knowledge I gained from the book alive and highly personal.

If you read wisdom literature like the Bible, the Koran, or other often philosophical or religious works, you will understand this book's intent -- it is to provide high level principles the reader must then bring to life with his or own experiences. I do not want to call Max's book scripture, but the experience of reading Leadership Jazz is a lot like reading that kind of literature. Different people will come away witt a different interpretation of what Max says, and it is often a highly personalized meaning. There is significant wisdom to be gained from this book, and it can be a source of personal enlightenment and awakening. .

One of the most widely read and studied texts composed in Late Antiquity is the prison diary of Vibia Perpetua, a young woman of the elite classes who was martyred in March of the year 202 or 203 C.E. in Carthage, as part of a civic celebration honoring Caesar Geta. She was well-married and had recently become the mother of a baby son, but despite her advantages, she refused to recant her faith when she was arrested with other recent converts to Christianity. Imprisoned with her was her pregnant slave Felicity. Perpetua's steadfastness in her belief led to her martyrdom in the amphitheater. A description of the heroic deaths of both women, and the autobiography of one of the leaders of the Christian community, Saturus, is woven into Perpetua's diary by an anonymous editor, who tells us that, as they died, Perpetua, Felicity, and the other condemned Christians bid farewell with a kiss of peace.

This unique and precious text survives in one Greek and in nine Latin manuscript versions. Thomas Heffernan's new study contains much that has never been done before, including a prosopography of all the individuals mentioned in the Passion, a new English translation and the first detailed historical commentary in English on the entire narrative of the Passion. It also includes a newly edited version of the Latin text based on all the extant manuscripts and - rarer still - the Greek text. He concludes the book with a complete codicological description of all of the known manuscripts and thorough scholarly indices of the text itself. Perpetua's prison diary is a revered text of early Christianity, and Heffernan's new translation and commentary brings unprecedented scholarly resources to the much-loved Passion.

Culture and Customs of Ghana

This book is an excellent resource for the general reader, the potential traveler, and the student who is seeking an uncomplicated and concise introduction to an important West African country. It holds the reader's interest throughout although it can also serve as a beneficial reference for the reader researching a particular topic. The organization is clear, logical, and balanced. Painful issues are presented fairly, honestly, and objectively, and points of pride abound. This book belongs in both general and academic collections.

We really enjoyed learning of the many customs, cultures, and historical events that have shaped Ghana. We are hosting an exchange student from Ghana this fall, and found this to be a wonderful resource.

Very good book!

I've read the book, and I liked it a lot! Gives you a great overview of the country of Ghana. It's particularly nice if you're doing a "study abroad" and intend to travel there like I did or if you just want to know more about the country. I recommended it for a study abroad class and that was the main textbook.

Another collection of brash, intelligent essays on economics by the author of The Armchair Economist (1993). Landsburg, a columnist for the online magazine Slate, turns his hand to demystifying everyday economics, using his nine-year- old daughter as a sounding board. While his exchanges with Cayley can turn overly sentimental, Landsburg's sharp wit and sharper insight make this a fun read for anyone with a taste for logic and unbiased opinions. Landsburg begins a discussion on NAFTA by debunking the notion that the number of workers who quit their jobs because of pay cuts represents the true cost of foreign competition. It's the workers who stay and take a pay cut, he argues, who are the real losers, because they bear the full brunt of the loss in wages. He later points out that while some would argue that it's unfair to the $16-an-hour worker to lose a job to a $3-an-hour worker, it's actually the public who, from the point of view of pure economics, has been cheated: They've been overpaying for products made by overpriced workers. At times, Landsburg risks sounding like a curmudgeon: He's irritated that Cayley's teachers dictate on the environment, sex, and drugs. A "must read" for people who like to use their brains.

As a parent and a citizen-of-earth, I enjoyed (almost) every page of this book. Landsburg helps the reader to think through some issues which are much more "black and white" than our society seems to think they are. Seeking for truth? Be careful of what you wish for. Some of the truths that Landsburg finds in his daughter's life and the way he wants to bring her up will shine some light in corners you may not want to look at. In particular, I was very moved by his views on how our society treats the most productive and successful among us. You will never listen to a Bill Gates joke the same way again. I loved this book! After borrowing it from a friend, I am buying my own copy. Worth owning and worth reading!

I probably would have liked this book better had the author not adopted such a smug attitude of moral and intellectual superiority. I also feel sorry for his daughter if he truly interacts with her as he claims.

best book ever written on economics and everyday life

Numerous books have been written on applying economics to everyday life, but Steve Landsburg's latest book employs a paradigm that puts it head and shoulders above the rest. His interactions with his daughter Cayley put a fascinating spin on things as her experiences and actions are filtered through the eyes of an economist. Landsburg points out again and again how we hold adults to a different, and lower, standard than we hold children, how we tell things to other adults that we would never say to a child and that adults accept excuses and reasoning from other adults that we would never accept from children.
Landsburg sometimes departs from the father-daughter paradigm to discuss issues that don't always fit in the with the rest of the book, but are fascinating none-the-less. Landsburg has a talent for making you think about an issue in novel ways. His analysis of minimum wage laws is clever and principled and nothing like you've ever heard before. Landsburg sheds the same critical light on everything from affirmative action to the rights of the unconceived.
But this is more than a book about economics. It's about what principles we want to use to guide our lives. It's about families. It's about a lot of other things too, but it's especially about fun. If you don't laugh out loud several times while reading this book, you need to have your head examined. Only the most determined curmudgeon could read this without cracking a smile at least once.

Catholic parents and their daughter's radical Guru...a surprising healing!

This book excels on many levels. Having been a lifelong, voracious reader of books (especially spiritual journeys), I have had my appetite fulfilled on many levels by "Tasting the Moon"...literally!!!

The author brings you into the room with her teacher, a 20th century holy man and crazy-wisdom adept. More astonishing to me, she writes her amazing story with her father as her editor and includes a moving chapter "Finding the Lost Treasure" about a deep healing with her mother.

Meg demonstrates a candid understanding of her flaws and expresses her lessons with Irish humor. She describes spiritual experiences that, to me, are astounding in any age but particularly in the 21st century. This book is a credit to her and honors the spiritual giant that she has devoted her life to.

This book is an extraordinary feat of storytelling and oedipal healing for a child raised in an Irish Catholic family of eight children. Read this book and be instructed, helped and supported in your own healing and spiritual exploration.

an authentic pioneer

Long before spirituality was gaining the popularity that it seems to be now, this author threw her life into the scrutiny and discomfort of a spiritual path with a living teacher. I was inspired by reading her story of being an intelligent, thinking, caring, worldly woman living on the fringe. Reading her tale gave me more room for my own life and answered many questions about why one even chooses to devote oneself to a guru in this modern age. Way beyond "Eat, Pray, Love," this book conveys a lifelong journey and not simply a self-help sabbatical.

Sweet,salty, tart, and fresh, Tasting the Moon

Any one that wants to be a to "know thyself", to love well and truely, to risk and learn will be nurtured by Ms. McDonnell's autobiographical account of her life's adventures. This book could be just a cathartic telling of time spent at the feet of a great spiritual teacher but the insights into 20th century life, culture, art, politics, upheavals, and opportunities makes Tasting the Moon an enlightening and entertaining eye witness account of our recent history. I was touched by her candid confessions of her failures and fears as well as her ability in learning to transend them. Growing up with her through the sexual revolution shed light for me on our common experience. Ms. McDonnell's elegant wordsmithing took me on a trip down memory lane but also to places I did not know were there or that I, too would like to go.

This is an excellent series for any law student to have as reference. Probably not bad to have as a practicing lawyer in Texas either. Some of the other books in the series might be better if you're on a budget.

Drama On The High Seas!

Story begins with a mysterious situation and ends on a emotional high. The characters are set in a contemporary world with superpowers from mind reading to levitation. The author spliced real world and fantasy like any superhero novel, but included hot romance between her main leads to make a reader turn page after page.

Emotions can be deadly when they overpower a person's supernatural ability, a fact Nautia Olson knows all to well. Being labeled unstable since the death of her twin brother Nate, Nautia hasn't been able to control her gift of water manipulation. As an aquator her skill is rare but she is a liability to those around her when she lets any emotion in the form of fear to anger to sadness take over her concentration. So when the U.S. Navy comes asking for her help on a top secret mission via the form of Captain Riley Barton, Nautia isn't sure she is up for the important job. Nautia eventually agrees to the mission thanks to her best friend Kray reminding her that this may be the one chance to find out what really happened to her brother and why she has such vivid nightmares of his death.

Overall, great book that definitely took me by surprise at the end. The mystery of it all was figuring out what was so special and "wrong" with Nautia. The poor girl is obviously special but its the why that bugs you until all is fully revealed. Nautia and Riley's relationship is cute; Basically Riley has it bad for the girl, while the girl is hung up on I don't want to hurt you with my powers problem. So you really kinda fall for Riley because he is sooo understanding and tries to be mister perfect boyfriend despite his mission and rank. Oh and their scenes were steamy, didn't expect that; Perhaps because I was stuck on the whole scifi-mystery part of the book and the romance side took me by surprise. My only issue was how the dialogue played out, the character perspectives changed chapter by chapter, however sometimes the scene would continue into the next chapter while changing into the alternative perspective, which continually broke up the moment for me. Then there is a bit of literary bread crumbs in the story that hinted at more for maybe a sequel, but if none are in the making than the end may have been to rushed in order to have that HEA conclusion. So if you want a new adult novel about a girl trying to find out why and how her brother died while honing her emotions to control her power over all things water aaannd read about her trying to make a relationship work too with a hot captain who is all about her, than this book will be worth a read.

The story is fantastic! Original and engaging, I am hoping for a part 2!

Nautia is a troubled young girl that is having what appears to be post traumatic stress from the death of her twin Nate. Nautia tries hard to get control of her power, she is an aquator - she can control and create water! How awesome would that power be? Nautia has been in therapy, however this isn't helping her. Soon she is targeted by the Navy for a mission. In walks Riley...
Nautia and Riley are instantly drawn to one another. They are each good for the other, however for reasons all their own....they fight it. Nautia has to overcome her issues fast or people will die, and she gets some troubling news once she does.
Breaking Through was a great book! I was instantly drawn into the story and I felt like I was actually there! I do feel that the speed of the middle was a little sluggish, I was ready for some more action. Once the action started I felt that the climax and end were a tad rushed. There is a lot of development for the end to go so fast.
The story is fantastic! Original and engaging, I am hoping for a part 2! Highly suggested as your next read!

thrilling, romantic, will keep you guessing

I was privileged to receive an advanced copy of the book and it had me from the very first page. It was thrilling and captivating while being romantic and funny at the same time as being suspenseful. The the main character had to come to grips with her gift of power over water and also about who she was. She needed to stop fearing herself and try to remember her past. She had her best friend along to help though reading her mind wasn't necessarily helping.
There little group actually consisted of 5 students from the elite school for students with powers. They had been recruited by the Navy for an undercover operation.
The five students and captain had to learn to work together with the five regular navy crew members along on the mission. Each had a job and each was highly depending on the others.
The steamy romance that occurs during the trading for this mission could put the whole team in danger can they keep it secret? Can they act like nothing is going on if they get attacked and one is captured or will one jeopardize the whole team?

Definitely worth the time.I read straight through couldn't put it down
