With all the hype around New Super Mario Brothers Wii for the Nintendo Wii, there is so much excitement awaiting in the wings to see the delightful Plumber from Nintendo deliver in a fun & loving adventure. But, where there is a new Mario game, there is also a new strategy guide awaiting for Mario fans to help them along the way. The new startegy guide for New Super Mario Brother Wii, is mostly a helpful guide that clearly displays the maps for all of the challenging levels throughout the Mushroom kingdom, and gives you good tidbits on how to defeat Bowser and his alliances from his Koopa Kids like Roy and Ludwig, to unlocking new paths to helping you accumulate Star Coins throught each level. My one big gripe is that I wish the guide could've brought up a little more detail on how some of the controls for the game work, as was in the past with previous strategy guides on Mario games. While it is sad that Nintendo has made the decision to stop making strategy guides of their own, and letting Prima handle them, what they made to help you out in New Super Mario Brother Wii, is mostly a helpful guide to save Princess Toadstool (a.k.a. Princess Peach) from the clutches of evil. If you have the game, I absolutely recommend you own the guide too.

Where's the Red Toad House solution guide?

I bought this guide for one reason and that was hopes of having the solutions to the Red Toad Houses for each level. The rest of the guide is amazing, but how can such a guide be complete without solutions to help max out your items? To most this won't be a big deal, however; I had hoped this guide would be much like the guide I owned for Super Mario Bros. 3 which contained the very useful solution guide for the matching games. Thank you to those who post FAQs on gamefaqs as I managed to find a solution guide for the Red Toad Houses there. On a grander scale with strategy guides today, they appear to contain far less information than strategy guides did 10-20 years ago. Is asking for a 100% complete guide too much to ask for? I don't think so. It is a strategy guide containing spoilers after all. Luckily with the exception of the missing solutions for the Red Toad Houses (which is not random as some may think) the guide is still exceptional and useful to find all of the secrets locked within the game.

Review of the guide itself . . somewhat disappointed

Some of the reviews are about how great the game itself is - and it is great. However this guide is disappointing.

I have always loved the Prima strategy books, but this one doesn't live up to their usual standards.

The game level maps are quite small and not easy to detect where you are. Also, they reference locations by number (at point 5, drop down into the space for instance) but there are also letters on the maps that don't have a corresponding explanation.

Also, the book is light on tips and actual strategies. I can understand not explaining every detail, but for the really tough parts, it would be nice to have a "hint box" that could be used if you get stuck.

The best feature is the location of the gold star coins.

On October 1, 1965, a group of Indonesian soldiers calling themselves "the September 30th movement" kidnapped and killed several high-ranking officers, claiming that they were preventing a plot against the president. But the movement itself was swiftly defeated, and another army general, Haji Suharto, took the opportunity to accuse the Communist Party of trying to overthrow the government. Seizing power for himself, he would rule Indonesia for more than three decades. The alleged Communist plot was a key element in Suharto's national mythology, but as Roosa explains, the haphazardness of the September 30th movement's actions has always provoked questions about its real motivations. His research, including a previously ignored account of the plot's shortcomings by one of its advisers, suggests that the truth lies close to the easiest explanation. An Excellent Look at a Sadly Overlooked Coup

"Pretext for Mass Murder" is an impressive overview of the complicated events behind the 1965-1966 coup in which pro-U.S. General Suharto seized power and began a three decade reign of terror. Roosa worked with a group of Indonesian scholars on interviews and other historical research which produced core material for this book. Though in the end Roosa concludes that a few members of the Indonesian communist party (PKI), by launching an ill-conceived anti-military action, did provide the provocation which rightist military forces and the U.S. had been waiting for in 1965, the foolhardy actions of those individual PKI members do not in any way absolve Suharto and his western backers for what consequently happened (an epic campaign of bloodletting which eviscerated the PKI and killed up to a million Indonesians).

In Roosa's words: "In the months before October, the United States and the army wanted an incident like the movement to occur[...] Eisenhower and the Dulles brothers - Allen at the head of the CIA and John Foster at the head of the State Department - viewed all nationalist Third World leaders who wished to remain neutral in the cold war as Communist stooges. In full confidence of their right to handpick the leaders of foreign countries, Eisenhower and the Dulleses repeatedly used CIA covert operations to overthrow such leaders: Mossadegh in Iran in 1953, Arbenz in Guatemala in 1954, and Souvanna Phouma in Laos in 1960. The Dulles brothers viewed Sukarno as yet another irritating character who needed to be removed from the world stage."

The book effectively synthesizes a wealth of information and is extremely well written, and thankfully devoid of the clunky jargon which sinks so many otherwise useful academic volumes.

A remarkable forensic history.

The botched coup of October 1, 1965 marked the demise of President Sukarno and the emergent politicide of a social movement. Roosa untangles the complexities of this event with sharp analytics and oral history scholarship. Much more than an eerie historical analysis, Roosa creates a captivating narrative that reads like a detective novel.

Academics have long debated "what really happened" on October 1st, when a group of mid-ranking military officers led a botched purge of suspected anti-Sukarno generals. A comedy of errors followed. Announcing itself over the airwaves as the "September 30 Movement" (G-30-S) from a captured center of Jakarta, the group was routed by nightfall. Under General Suharto, the emerging military leadership pinned the episode on the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), granting the pretext for an extermination of Indonesian leftists.

This book transparently assembles an updated narrative with logical prowess. Roosa shine in his sharp interrogation of past sources, reconciling prior insights with new sources and testimonies. Using a surprising new document from a key coup insider, together with fresh insights from survivors, Roosa brings the events into focus. Importantly, this work comes closest to understanding the extent of PKI's involvement in the events; tragically, it seems PKI was implicated by the secretive, cavalier actions of party insiders.

The Pretext for Mass Murder is a successful historical analysis. While intensive and specific, it is a surprisingly readable work on a mysterious episode in Indonesian history. A remarkable read for those interested in Indonesian history and the practice of oral history.

A closure to a much debated episode of the Indonesian history

This book provides closure to this dark episode of the Indonesian history. Neither supportive of the Suharto propaganda, nor pandering to conspiracy theorists (that Suharto himself masterminded a coup destined to fail), it is a balanced discussion on the 30th September Movement based on key new evidence available in the 2000s. The book is structured from the picture of the movement itself and how it implodes, to the role of the Special Bureau and the PKI, and finally to the bigger picture of how the movement fits into a global conflict of communism vs. the west.

There are interesting sub-conflicts on which the book only implies. First, between the Sukarnoists and anti-Sukarnoists and how the army/Suharto pretended at the beginning to be Sukarnoist, only to suppress not only PKI but also all other Sukarnoist organizations. It is worth noting that even the nationalist party, the PNI, was also subjected to the repression. Eventually, all the service branches, including the army suffered from Suharto's purges. The other sub-conflict was between the two wanna-bes: Suharto vs. Sjam. Both shared common characteristics - secretive and relatively unknown. These served Suharto well (no one knew whether he was anti- or pro-Sukarno), but not Sjam, whose ambitions eventually destroyed the movement. In fact, cultural explanations have attempted to portray Suharto as the typical Javanese outsider who managed to unseat a king through a creeping coup (Pramoedya Ananta Toer's book on a real historical character and East Javanese king, Ken Arok, was structured along this line). However, the biggest sub-conflict in this book was between the PKI and the US Government, a conflict in which PKI was doomed to lose. While the US worked through and supplied the Indonesian army with training, information and materiel, the PKI suffered from the Moscow-Beijing split and had no access to arms. Short of an armed rebellion, the PKI's position was not tenable, despite the appearances of its gaining access to power through ministerial appointments in the cabinet.

Suharto's coup d'etat remains the smartest coup that the US has helped to engineer. I don't think any other coup has been as convoluted as it had been. The title of the book also puts this fact (a Suharto coup, not PKI) right. Such facts that the CIA supplied the army with kill lists should be made even more public. As it is, demands for the Indonesian government to apologize for the mass killings should be paired with demands for the US government to do so.

Unfortunately, despite this book (translated and freely available online in Indonesian) and other alternative publications after Suharto's downfall in 1998, the debate about the movement and the PKI is still colored and dominated by the results of 30 years of Suharto propaganda. It will take another generation, before the (current) generals realize that playing up PKI as a latent threat to the country is an outdated and silly way of bullying people. Moreover, beneficiaries of Suharto's New Order are still alive and kicking even in the current government. The former president SBY is a son-in-law of the head of the special forces in 1965-1966, which trained local militias to kill, and initiated the killings of, those suspected of being PKI or PKI sympathizers. Those who claimed to be 'student activists' in 1965, who supported the army and received funding from the CIA, are now in government as advisers to various ministers.

Finally, I would love to see someone turn this event or the book into a movie. The similarities and parallels (such as the debate of military vs. political operation, and the use of the reserve troops) to Operation Valkyrie, for one, is just too much to ignore.

He also received the 1988 Outstanding Faculty of the Year awarded by the Alpha Sigma Lambda adult student honorary at Simpson College.

Basic and fundamental, yes, but surprisingly thought-provoking and informative

What we have in this easy-to-dismiss book (because of its cutesy title and unorthodox shape) is a collection of remarkably interesting, in some instances valuable insights or explanations provided by the co-authors, Michael W. Preis and Matthew Frederick, who presumably learned more than 101 "things" (a useless word when you think about it) within and beyond a business school community. Preis and Frederick stick to business basics with this approach: following an assertion ("X is...." or "Y is not necessarily...."), they provide a brief but insightful delineation that corrects or modifies a misconception. For example:

"Not all capital is economic." (#5)

Unique and Memorable statements in book

I perused this book in a Barnes & Noble. I read up to the 70th point. I don't have time for a full on review but I just wanted to inform potential readers that it is in fact an excellent resource especially for people who are into business and entrepreneurs.

I was worried that too many statements would've been too plain or general, albeit some were, most were very interesting things to note.

I'm going to look up on my iPad if there's an ebook version.

Prepared as a series of three lectures in Cambridge's Tanner Series on Human Values, the material is both meticulously thought out and informally presented, including many illustrations by Penrose and others. For publication, the author sought out rebuttals and commentary by philosophers Abner Shimony and Nancy Cartwright, as well as his own colleague and occasional rival, the well-known theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. Penrose then reserves the last word for himself, an author's prerogative. The result is a sharp but polite argument on the nature of thinking and its reducibility. Lectures by a renowned mathematician and physicist on the connections of relativity and quantum theory (the science of the very large and the very small), with an eye to understanding the nature of the mind. Penrose has been over this ground before (in The Emperor's New Mind, not reviewed, and Shadows of the Mind, 1994), and his contention that artificial intelligence is an impossibility has generated a good deal of controversy. Here he reiterates and extends his essential arguments and invites refutation from a trio of critics in related disciplines: Abner Shimony, Nancy Cartwright, and Stephen Hawking. One central point of debate has to do with the relation between mathematics and the ``real universe''--or, as Penrose puts it, between the physical and the platonic worlds. A popular view of how science works is that the scientist, looking to explain a series of observations, finds a mathematical relationship that accounts for the data. Penrose argues that this view has things backwards: The mathematical relationship is the reality, and the data merely an expression of it. Einstein conceived his equations before data were available to verify them; when data became available, his calculations checked out exactly. Penrose goes on to consider the paradoxes of quantum mechanics, but readers without sophisticated mathematics are likely to find this section tough going. Finally, Penrose attempts to apply these issues to the question of whether the activities of mind can ever be duplicated by a computational device, a possibility he denies. His three critics then point to what they feel are weaknesses in his arguments, and finally Penrose counters their rebuttals. Concise, clear and thought-provoking

I see others have praised this book richly and a couple others poorly. One reviewer said one needed to be a mathematician and a physicist to understand the book. It would certainly help, but Penrose describes enough about the function of the math concepts he invokes so that I can follow him (and even in maths one has to have studied things like those density matrices to really understand in depth). I do understand about computability and problems which have been proven non-computable, and I think he is possibly right, that 'mind', because it shares/crosses the quantum/macro world boundaries, cannot be easily mathematically described without finding a 'bridge' between those worlds. I found his description/hypothesis about the microtubules fascinating (and again I am not a biologist but I am not disturbed that he didn't try to explain or prove his hunch regarding the possible functioning of these structures).
I appreciated the book for the wonderfully clear style as well as the content.

Lucid approach to establish a quantum-based mind theory

Penrose concisely manages to give us an overview about 3 somehow interconnected fields, the mathematically described large-scale world, the deterministic quantum microcosm and the recently emergent mind science. His major aspiration is to see the new generation of scientists erecting a bridge between the quantum world and the always controversial substance of conscience.
Having in his mind (in a neo-platonic way) the idealistic nature of mathematics that apply to the physical world as a well-justified model, he firstly presents some themes from cosmology and abstract mathematics (e.g. hyperbolic, Riemann geometry), and why, in his opinion, Guth's inflationary universe theory, has weak points (see also Penrose's book- Difficulties with inflationary cosmology) In chapter 2 ,quantum physics related, he gives us interesting examples (the paradox& puzzles reference shows his great sense of humor) and explain us how wavefunction's reduction can assist us to deal with the probabilistic nature of events in this level.
In the most interesting third one, he is concerned to lay an in-depth foundation between quantum procedures through neurons, so as to explain his main belief - brain function (that creates conscience) can't be simulated through A.I. Even though I tend to prefer J.Searle opinion (presented in his book Mind,Brain & Science) Penrose's points are adequately justified, thus leaving an open window for Free Will.
In the next three chapters certain Penrose's point's are opposed from Shimony (physician, philosopher) Nancy Cartwright(logician, philosopher) and the renowned Steven Hawking.
Shimony in a formalistic language, but slightly excessive for the common reader, finally makes a conjecture about a hyperselection law, in order to avoid quantum dualism, while Mrs Cartwright sets a contronversy against the usefulness of a perception that sets Physics the only explanatory science for mind theory and not for example Biology.(which for Penrose is reduced to Physics)
Hawking denies an indispensable and direct correlation between quantum gravity and the yet inextricable conscience and in chapter 7 Penrose responds to all so as to end this dialectically fair and fruitful discussion.
Overall this was worth my time, not only for this subject's great interest but because Penrose explains his thesis, clearly and distinctly.The uprising need for 'popular' science is reflected and adequately satisfied through this lucid book which succinctly presents a contemporary overview in a 'hot' scientific field.
Even non-expert readers (no special background in maths or physics is needed) will be able to follow and admire the ongoing revolution of scientific thought.Given it was written in'97 I'm looking forward and will benevolently embrace another similar work of a splendid thinker such as Penrose
