"Lead Kindly Light" audio/visual snapshots of the lives of southern Americans

I have just received my copy of this fine set of rare tunes and even rarer images from the collections of Sarah Bryan and Peter Honig. The mixing of these two collections which, while it doesn't shed additional light on the musicians who recorded the wonderful discs collected in this anthology, does tell us scores about the collections of the people who listened to those discs. Sarah Bryan's assemblege show us unguarded and casual moments in the lives of the subjects in their southern mountain homes and some, with their imperfections and errors give us a visceral sensation of the hand of the photographer behind the camera. Peter Honig's collection -- even for those of us savvy to the glorious output of the founding hillbilly recording artists -- skews to the refreshingly unusual and unique and speaks volume of his finely seasoned intimacy with the recordings of the period. Again, while the purpose of the set is not to cast additional light on the artists or the subjects in the pictures, they help us humanize the audience for these fine commercial 78s. The package is strong and attractive and the sound quality acutely suits the late acoustic/early electric 78s chosen here. All in all, the choices are wide, creative and satisfying leaving us better for the whole visual/auditory experience and leaving us wanting more. Much more.

She collrects photos - he collects records, they combined together to produce this book/CD set

. Sarah Bryan loves to collect “vernacular” photos of the first half of the 20th century. Her husband, Peter Honig, loves to collect pre-War 78s. With the assistance Ledbetter they combined their interests to compile Lead Kindly Light, where about 155 of Bryan’s sepia-tone photos of people in the south in daily activities fill a book while 46 recordings transferred from 78s in Honig’s collection fill the two CDs inserted in the front and back covers. Most of the records are of “old-timey” or jug band music and the majority of the artists are ones you’ve probably never heard of. There are two short essays by the authors, though I’d have appreciated a bit more research into who the performers on the recordings are. But, like a few other photo/CD projects from DtD, the book is fun to look through while you listen to the music.

It's another fine book and CD release from the well-respected Dust-to-Digital label.

The performances are amazing. For instance

I wonder if the soloists and bands had only one chance to get it right at the 78rpm recording sessions?

The recordings are rare. The performances are amazing.

For instance:
A lot of bands back then did something that I have never heard an old time band do today, not yet anyway.They squared off the beat. Every band member pounded whatever they were playing with a right angle. The Skillet Lickers did this sort of thing really well...

The photos are full of life: pets, vehicles, houses, yards, commerce and character. Beautiful tones. My favorite is on page 78, "Our Queen."

About the Author
Doug Bradley first appeared as Pinhead in the 1987 horror masterpiece Hellraiser, and has continued to play the role in a series of successful movies (the latest instalments, Deader and Hellworld, are due for release in 2004). Other film and TV appearances include starring in Barker's Nightbreed and alongside Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy) in The Killer Tongue, and a role in the recent BBC2 dramatisation The Private Life of Samuel Pepys, alongside Steve Coogan.

Read it anyway

It's a shame that this book is probably destined to have a very limited cult audience. It's written by Pinhead, and if you don't like the "Hellraiser" series you'd probably tend to just skip it. I wouldn't blame you, but you shouldn't.

If I have one complaint it's that the "history of the mask" portion at the beginning seems sort of tacked on as if Mr. Bradley felt he needed scientific or psychological justification for writing a book. If that is the case, he needn't have worried. This thing is chock full of hilarious behind-the-scenes anecdotes about great horror actors old and new, including Mr. Bradley, written with dry self-deprecating British wit. It's like spending the day with Doug Bradley, and I laughed my way through the entire thing.

I would recommend it to anyone that is curious about how film sets work and how actors cope with prosthetics, or to anyone that just loves movies. Don't worry, there's no torture or hell-raising, and it won't give you nightmares.

And I'm ready for a sequel please, Mr. Bradley. I'm sure there's more where this came from...

great horror fan read

I checked this out of the local library a few months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Not only does Mr. Bradley fill this enjoyable book with enjoyable anecdotes about his career as Pinhead, he gives a history of make-up in Hollywood during the golden age with innovaters such as Jack Pierce and Lon Chaney. This is a great book for not just fans of the Hellraiser movies, but of the horror genre as a whole and anyone fascinated with the history of make-up and prosthetics in movie. A very interesting and quick read!

A Great Book For Fans of Doug Bradley

Masks have been used in religious rites, theatrical productions, and movies. In this book Doug Bradley, better known as Pinhead from Hellraiser, delves into the world of makeup and masks. The book is structured chronologically beginning with a historical view of masks that moves on to the classic horror movie actors; Lon Chaney, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr., and Christopher Lee to name a few. He also interviewed several newer horror film actors including Robert England and the many stuntmen who have played Jason and Michael Myers. He sprinkles here and there memories from his own career and then ends the book with chapters devoted to his work on Hellraiser.

It was interesting to find out how the movie make up was applied and the hardships that the actors went through. It truly seemed to transform them into different people. Boris Karloff endured a lot to create his beloved monster, so much so that he helped to establish the Screen Actors Guild so that actors have a voice when it comes to harsh treatment on film sets.

I am not a fan of Pinhead. I read this book because I am a fan of the classic horror films from Universal and Hammer Studios. Except for a very interesting chapter at the beginning on the history of mask use in the theater and the chapters on older monster film legends, this book was disappointing. Bradley is a good writer and he kept my attention throughout the book, but it is geared toward the fans of Bradley’s work and I am not a fan. If you like both the older and newer horror films especially the films of Doug Bradley then you will enjoy this book much more than I did.

this is a good book for people returning to college or new students going to college. It is written so that
anyone can understand the the concepts explained in the book.
It is colourful and interesting, has personality assessment, thinking style assessments and survey's in the book
which helps a new student to understand how they process information. I highly recommend this book, it is used in
the freshman seminar class that I teach and students reviews are always favourable

Great book with beautiful illustrations

This way this teaches colours is amazing. Each page has a picture in black and white apart from one particular colour which is very bright, and this is the colour that is taught on that particular page. The pictures are stylised and beautiful but occasionally a child might have trouble working out exactly what something is (i.e. lots of blue circles for the ocean - my son thought they were balls). The only colours that aren't great are gold and silver at the end - the gold doesn't look very gold and the silver looks grey, it's quite hard for kids to tell the difference. I think those two should've been brighter.
The last page has the question: "which colour would you like?" and a circle of each colour with the name underneath. This is the best bit; my son points to the colours at random and gets me to say the names. And yesterday he actually identified a colour in Hindi himself for the first time!

Interesting concept!

Scrum is a very interesting concept to implement into the workplace to more quickly and efficiently complete projects. This book provides a very simple, easy to follow, step by step guide on the basic principles of scrum and how to implement it into your workplace. If you're like me and have "heard" of this concept and are intrigued by it, yet don't fully understand what it is or how to implement it, then this book is perfect for you! Highly recommended read!

For me, it is often the difficulty to quickly deal with any program or methodology, and instructions to them even more complicate the task. This guide struck me that helped me in a very short time to understand how to use Scrum and avoid mistakes! I did it took about 20 minutes! Well, I really went out of the dark during project review meetings :-)

In order to understand the Pakistani state and government’s treatment of non-dominant ethnic groups after the failure of the military operation in East Pakistan and the independence of Bangladesh, this book looks at the ethnic movements that were subject to a military operation after 1971: the Baloch in the 1970s, the Sindhis in the 1980s and Mohajirs in the 1990s.

The book critically evaluates the literature on ethnicity and nationalism by taking nationalist ideology and the political divisions which it generates within ethnic groups as essential in estimating ethnic movements. It goes on to challenge the modernist argument that nationalism is only relevant to modern-industrialised socio-economic settings. The available evidence from Pakistan makes clear that ethnic movements emanate from three distinct socio-economic realms: tribal (Baloch), rural (Sindh) and urban (Mohajir), and the book looks at the implications that this has, as well as how further arguments could be advanced about the relevance of ethnic movements and politics in the Third World.
